New door panel...kinda
Re-did part of my doors today. Figured the results weren't too bad for about $5 and 2hrs worth of work, so if your 20-something year old interior is driving you crazy (like it was me) here's what I did for a quick fix.
You'll only need about a 1/2 yard of fabric (but always get extra for mistakes.) For color matching purposes I suggest stopping by a Home Depot or Lowes to pick up some peices of paper with the paint samples. It makes color matching much more convenient. Grab a handful of colors you like, take them out to the car and pick the one you want. Then you can take the sample into the fabric store (Wal-Mart) to find the right shade.
The center section of the door is easy to remove. There's little metal tabs on the back that hold it on. Just stretch the fabric over the panel and staple it down (an everyday stapler has enough strength to hold it.) I'd imagine glue would work too, but that could get messy.
The door pull is a little harder to do. If you've got sewing skills that helps. I removed the handle and wrapped the fabric around using straight pins to define and hold the shape. Then just pull the handle out of the fabric and sew it up. The little hand held stitching machines from AC Moore work great if you don't have a full size sewing machine (and hand sewing does in a pinch if you're patient!)
Cut the holes you need and reinstall.
Now you've got a whole new look.
