new to 1st gens need help
Hi, I recently acquired an "85 GS(auto) but I will eventually swap trannies to a standard.
I'm a new first gen owner, my previous car was an "88 GXL so I am not exactally new to rotaries.
My husband has always been my "rotary mechanic" but I really want to get my hands dirty on this one, I wanna do my own work and learn the "rotary ropes"
I have searched for my current problem and have found little to help or reference to it so here it goes... lets see the magic of the forums at work.
When I start my car it idles at 3k RPM no matter how long I wait, it never lowers.
I've tried adjusting the idle screws and the a/f to no avail.
I think it might be the throttle cable tension but I need some opinions as to what the problem might be and how to go about fixing it. Cause OBVIOUSLY 3k RPM is way to fast for a motor to be going when you put her from park into reverse (chirp*....stall)
Thanks for everyone's time!!

how much tension is on the cable? you can loosen the nut on the cable and pull it off and see where that gets you. i wouldn't mess with the air/fuel screw unless you don't much care about emissions and running rich. you may consider that your dashpot is sticking. if the choke was sticking, the engine would probably idle a tad rough.

Don't think it is the choke as whether she is choked or not she loves to stay with a high rev. I just completed the rats nest removal as I was tired of looking at all the extra stuff. I am about to try to adjust the throttle cable...it seems pretty taunt, I'll get back and post results later

Airflow is my life
Check that the choke cable isint the problem. The throttle cable isint going to get misadjusted on its own. Disconnect the choke cable and see what it does. Sounds like thats your problem as 3k is just about right for top end of the fast idle system.
