need some info
after doing my brakes, changing all my fluids, and installing a new starter cuz the other one was freakin the hell out, i went for a drive. i got about half a mile before i started hearing a buzzing sound coming from behind me (inside the car) i looked at my gauges and the voltmeter was reading past 16. i didnt know what the hell was going on so i shut it off and as soon as i did i saw some smoke coming out from under the hood. the smoke was coming out of the air cleaner and from somewhere near the bottom of the engine like around where the metering pump is. could i have installed the new starter the wrong way? what would cause something like this? thanks in advance for any advice anyone may have to offer.

I wouldn't think that the starter is necessarily causing your problems. To me if you got the smoke during cranking, that would make more sense. But when you are justing driving down the road, I don't know why the starter would start smoking like crazy, because it shouldn't even be engaged. What did you do as far as wiring it up? If you used all the stock connectors, without cutting or splicing anything then you should be okay. This is assuming that you connected all the wiring to the correct terminals.
How much smoke were you getting? Thick clouds of it, or just a little hazy? See if your headlights, and headlight motors still work. When I blew a fusible link it smoked pretty bad like you are describing, and my headlights quit working becuase of the bad links. If you headlights aren't working any more then it sounds to me like you may have blown one or all of your fusible links. The fusible link is the brown plastic box mounted on the front side of the driver's strut tower. However, if you do have a bad fusible link, this probably means that you have a wiring issue. I can't think of any other reason, other than bad wiring that would cause a blown link.
Another thing you may want to look into is an alternator problem. You may have had some kind of overcharging incident due to your alternator, if this is even possible. I'm not sure. I would start by checking out the fusible links, and go from there....
