Need Help Quick. Whats all needed for oil cooler swap. (beehive -> other style)

I got a good deal on a setup and i need to know exactly what i need for the swap. Im tearing all the stuff off of a 83 rx7 with the oil cooler underneath the rad.

I know i need the oil cooler, duh. But how do you take it off? then i need the oil lines, another duh, but how do those come off? How about the oil cooler pedestal. How do you take that thinger off. I know you need to do something with a banjo bolt. I dont want to haul a million tools so some specs on bolt sizes would be great too.

ASAP if possible. Im going tomorrow at like 2.

What kind of car are you putting it in?

If it's an '84 (like your avatar) then you'll need the rad as well, since the '84 rad is taller and doesn't have room for the cooler underneath.

And since the shroud isn't the same from short rad to tall rad (though it looks it) you'll need that too.

Oil cooler and lines for sure, don't know how it's mounted so you'll probably need the brackets, or the metal panels that surround the rad/oil cooler.

And since the rad's changing, the tubes for coolant as well.

Basically strip the '83 from the headlights back and mount it in your '84

Jon

Edit: Oh look, Jeezus found something for you in the archive by searching for it. And I even prefix'd it with the word COOLING so it'd be easier to find. Hmm... I guess this is the point where I say "search, n00b".

Lol. I gave up on the "do a search" method. no one does it, so why not? I even learned something today from this search alone.

you gudge and dont even ask.

For one i did search. But i used the term "oil cooler instal" and never got really anything that helped me. Thanks tho.

Yeah i think i found all the info i needed. Btw, for what ive read. You dont actually need to replace the rad if you plan on putting the oil cooler infront of the rad. Im getting new lines anyways so that doesnt matter. It could actually be behind the rad if the fan blades werent there. Which might not be there by that time anyways because im swapping to electric.

Anyways. This should be all the info i need. Thanks alot. Props to jeebuz

All this fuss about an oil cooler in 2 different threads, and you couldn't even find the write up I did on the beehive swap.

Link to the writeup is in my sig line, btw.

FYI, do not put the cooler behind the radiatior, defeats the purpose of the cooler entirely. And this time, don't argue, just do it.

Obviously he does not pay attention to most things we try to educate him with.

Seeing as 83's didn't have the front mount oil cooler stock the one you're getting all these parts from has obviously been switched, so be sure that all the parts are correct, and whoever did the swap didn't rig anything.

I *could* be wrong, but I know that halfway through the '83 model year they made a bunch of changes. If you're reading in some places you'll see '83.5 listed sometimes. I think there may have been some FMOC cars early on in the '83 model year, but yes you're right, I've mostly seen beehive '83s.

Good to know you got the info chedda_j, I'm going to close this thread before the banter gets out of hand.

Jeezus, that's a good way to learn bro... do searches for others and learn it. I used to search on anything that I didn't already know the answer to off the top of my head. Lately I've been slightly lazy on that... and trochoid usually beats me to the punch with the answer when I do know, lol. He's gotta be the swiftest old fart I know, and his car ain't bad either
