Sounds like a soleniod problem, or your battery doesn't have enough juice.

first check your wires mine was doing the same thing and as I figured it out later it was my power wire that wasnt giving enough juice to the starter i replaced it and it was fine since.
To replace the wire is not that hard I did it myself in about 1 hour and now it start on the fisrt turn. If that dont work then it probably your starter but make sure you check the wires becouse the starter at advance auto was like 200 bucks.

When I first put my 12a back together last summer, I had the same problem. There are 2 large lugs on the starter, so I hooked up the power cable to one and the ground cable to the other. The install looked and seemed logical to me at the time. I even tried 2 more starters I had, with the same results. I then checked either the FSM or one of the 1st gens and discovered my error. Some days I think I know quite a bit about these cars, other days, I can be a real bonehead. It had been quite a while since the car had been apart and the result was the same, the starter just clicked.

Most likely, one of your connections is not making good contact.

Btw, the ground cable DOES go on the long starter bolt.

Disclaimer: No starters were harmed or injured during this fubar. I put the origional one back in and it is spinning up the bp just fine.

Live and learn some days, that's the fun part of life and working on 7's.
