Need help diagnosing cause of engine shutting off
I was driving in slow moving traffic today and I was coming to a stop when I clutched in. I heard a medium loudness pop from the back of the car, similar to a backfire. The car died and it wouldn't start by cranking. I searched all the wires and I am getting spark. I took apart the distributor and it is a little worn but nothing I expect would be a problem. I had to move the car from where it died. I was pushing it and I figured I would try push starting it. It started and smoked like a fiend. After about 30 seconds it stopped smoking. It ran normal for about 15 minutes and then it attempted to do the same thing again. I just dropped the clutch and it ran again. Any ideas what this might be attributed to? I am not sure if this is linked, but at 1500 RPM it would bounce back down to 1000 unless I gave it a bit of gass and it would rev fine over 2000. Any ideas?

I have two 85 GSL-SE. The one in question is quite a bit slower. I think it has some weird sheyat going on. I had someone familiar with FB's check out the running one and he said it actually felt a bit weak. The one that is broke down is much slower than the one I'm driving now. Will be interesting to find out what is wrong with it.
