Need help/ car sputtering at 3k BAD
The car just recently started to sputter or choke. I thought it was the plugs but I was wrong. I have put new onces in just today. The cap, rotor, wires and all that other stuff are new. I have heard that the FD's have the same problem. I just dont know how to fix the problem. Any ideas guys. I really need to get this car running well for the fact that its my daily driver and I have to go to MN in a few weeks and then all the was to drag wars in IL. It is a 84 GSL SE. 126k on the engine.

Start by verifying that you have spark on all plugs. After that, you can begin tracking down any faulty components. Also, check all of your battery cables to ensure that they have good, clean connections at both ends.

Kentetsu, all of the plugs have spark. I checked that. The problem is that it only does it when the car has a load on it. I have no way to log or even record what the car does when it sputters/ chokes.

Alright this same scenario happened to me. it just so happens you have to do the timing correctly. pull the pully until the first notch (cut out on the pulley) marks up with the point liner. then pull your distributer out (and align the rotor inside with the leading spark plug.. there should be marks to help you with that.. basically its up) then slowly put it back in but try to keep the rotor at those marks) connect all hoses and wires and go ahead and try the car again. I had the same problems and symptoms at 3k rpm.. it will putter then when you pass 3k it will have a different humm totally. do that and it should work! good luck.

Well dammit! You know, someone comes to the forum seeking help, then some nimrod tells him "replace your coils and ignitors" based on almost no information at all. Why would you replace your ignitors and coils if you have spark on all four plugs? That was just wasted money. I'll try to think on your mechanical problem after I calm down a little. lol.

I will be going to the my shop here in a little bit to work on the car. I will check everything again just to make sure that I did not miss anything. Even though I did all ready buy the coils and they are on the way here. If that is not the problem I can return them to Ray at Malloy Mazda.

Well, thats good news at least. Must have set you back a bundle for those parts. Anyway, this is beginning to sound like a carb issue. If it only happens when there is a load on it.
The secondary jets on my carb got clogged up with some kind of buildup, and until I finally did a rebuild on it she would bog out if I gave it too much throttle. I could cruise on the freeway just fine, as long as I took a really long time to get up to speed. But the more throttle I gave it, the slower I would go, once I passed a certain point (probably when the secondaries opened). If this is sounding like what's happening to you, I'll see if I can dig up my old thread on it, and you can review the other symptoms to make sure before you rebuild your carb. Good luck man.

I just put the new coils in and the car is still doing to same ****. I talked to a friend that had the same problem with his FB. He told me that I should check the oil pump. I dont know why but I figure it is worth a shot. I just need to know how to check if the pump is bad.
By the way the car is fuel injected.

timing! verify wires are done correctly.. after that! verify you are timing it on the right mark! mine had a yellow dot.. which i times it to.. and it would sputter at 3k so i got it retimed to an actually cut out notch on the pulley.. then it worked just fine!

Do I need a timing gun for this? If so what pug wire do I need to attach the timing gun to?
the sputtering as of this moment is so bad that the car is not driveable.

The plugged cats theory sounds plausible though. If you place your hand over the exhaust while someone revs the engine to 4k or so you should feel a good strong blast. If you don't your cats are likely clogged. This may also be accompanied by the warning light that sez "overheat exhaust system" alluminating, assuming that light still works.

Well im back for some more help on the matter. I have replaced the car and put a newer distributer on. The car still does the same thing. The only thing I have not done yet is to just shot it.

are you positive your wires comin from the distributor are on the right plugs? I had this same prob when i changed spark plugs.. plug wires from the distributor were on the wrong plugs.. it still ran, but very crappy..

And if they are on the right plugs then go and get/borrow a timing light and check your timing if you have a put in a new distributor. put the signal wire on L1 and make sure the mark on the pulley is right.
