Need Clarification on the Ol' ATF

Hey, so far everything I've read about the ATF(12A), says to throw in a cap full or 2oz . Is this gonna be enough? Am I not understanding this? How much do I need? Thanks in advance.

Id probally say around 2 or 3 oz.. Be prepared its gonna smoke up the block BIG TIME! Have new plugs in hand after you burn out the old ATF... You got to pump the **** outta it to get it started. But it will clean her out good..

If you're just doing the ATF treatment as maintinance, to clean things up again, then a bout 2-3 oz should do it. If you know the car has a lot of carbon build-up or has been sitting for a very long time, then I'd recommend 2-3 oz in each combustion chamber (i.e. 3 doses per rotor).

BTW, if you can find it, use MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) instead of ATF.

I hope you're not dumping it fdown the carb... Gunks it up.

Use a turkey baster to shoot some of it into the plug holes.

thanks for the reply guys, I was going to dump it down the carb, but I suppose there's nothing wrong with shooting it into the plug holes....so which holes? And I've already got my healthy dose of MMO to fire in after, when I change the oil and all that.

Shoot it in the ones at the bottom, the leading plug holes... I have always just put it in the carb, but I shot a healthy dose of carb cleaner right afterward so it didnt dry up. Been ok there, but if ATF is left to dry in the carb it will cause serious problems...

You're talking about adding MMO to your engine oil? That's a good idea too, but I meant using it INSTEAD of ATF in the ATF treatment. It'll do a better job of cleaning than ATF.

I've always dumped mine down the primaries - about 4 oz in each. Never caused me any build up or gunk problems ( i do this treatment twice a year!) - The detergents in the ATF seem to reduce the build up - as someone mentioned, carb cleaner afterward is also a good idea. Each to their own I suppose - the plug whole method works just as well - the fuel injection guys will tell you that.

Also note, if you are running cats, the ATF has been know to cause some clogging problems

And smoke........ you won't believe it til you see it (especially if you pour down as much as I do)

Thanks, I'm catless anyway, I'm givin it a try tonight. I work in an industrial area so the smoke shouldn't annoy anyone when I fire it up on a saturday afternoon. Can't wait to see the results, by the way I'm at about 270k, on one engine I'm pretty sure, anyone have any shocking mileage #s?

Trust me, you don't wanna fire it up at day time especially if there's people around. Unless you want the fire department to rock up.

ummmmm, i'd really like to do this, but i'm a tad worried 'bout the smoke too. i live in a residential area... which'll mean pist off neighbors. how much is a lot of smoke? keep in mind i had a 79 die on me... sorta... started smoking, burning 'bout a quart of oil every 3 days. i actually *did* have someone call the fire dept when i was letting it warm up one morining and if anyone knows, i have a dellorto sidedraft, and was curious about shooting the mmo down the meter oil lines into the carb. i think it just goes straight into the intake manf. and with mmo, do you have to replace the plugs? i know atf can gunk them up, but mmo cleans, and its combustible to boot!

Thumbs up One more time!

MMO....Marvel Mystery Oil....

It's honey for your spinner....ATF works, but it's in no way designed to be burned....On the other hand, MMO IS designed to be burned, and it cleans, and lubricates....Anywhere from a full to half quart in your sump each oil change, and while you're doing that, dump another half to full quart into your fuel tank.

Hear me now...Believe me later
