Need appraisal help?
Ok I have been here before , I have an 80 LS and I need to get a ballpark appraisal. I went to nada.com and kbb.com and there was nothing for LS. I have two dealership appraisals that are very high. What I really want to know is what should I insure a 1980 LS with a rebuilt engine with 6k on it and the body has 69k. But what should I value the car at when I drive it this summer? This is for insurance purposes only; I don’t what to under or over insure it.

Normal insurance is only going to value your car based on kbb or nada numbers and our cars have fallen out of those books due to age. The number will be so low that just about any claim will trigger the car to be totalled. If this is your only car and a DD then shop around and just get the best price with adequate medical and liability. If you make a claim for more than a few hundred dollars the insurance company will just total it and you'll be out of a car and with very little money.
If its a second car, get classic car insurance and have a professional appraisal done so its valued correcty. The classic car insurance is cheap and they will pay much more based on the appraised value. One caveat, usually classic car insurers have stipulations on the mileage allowed or other usage limits os you would not be able to use it as a DD.

It’s a weekend car but I don’t have a garage to store in the summer. I herd about some classic insurance but one of there prerequisites was to be garaged kept. Is there a difference between a classic car appraisal and a dealer appreasel?
Nada.com had the most info they actually went to 1979 Rx7s. But they only had GS and L models no LS.

I wouldn't trust a dealer appraisal much. I would go for a classic car appraiser with some foriegn ( japanese preferrably) car experience. Should be able to find them in a yellow pages or ask someone next time your at a classic car cruise or show and see who they used in your area.
The LS is the leather sport edition, its out fitted similiar to a GS but includes a few extras, so I would think a GS based value is closer to accurate. The LS's were limited in number so they may hold some special premium above GS but its not going to be by a lot.
