mystery squeak

When I first bought my SE it did not have any squeaks, rattles, or other noises. Well, over time it has developed a few. The most annoying, without a doubt, is the horrendous squeak that comes from the rear of the vehicle when it gets hot.

I am pretty sure its the god forsaken exhaust hangers. But want to be sure before I find a way to replace them. It only does it after about 30-40 minutes of driving.

IF it is my exhaust hangers...is there a EASY way to fix em?

Get it nice and hot so the squeak happens... get down on the ground and start rattling stuff... find out EXACTLY where it is coming from.

If it is a hanger, then you have to find out why its squeaking... is it a busted weld? do you have rubber hangers that have collapsed? Once you have that info, we might be able to give you a better idea of how complex the fix will be.

Squeaking exhaust system is usually due to a high-temp metal bushing between the mid-pipe and muffler when the bolts get loose or rusty. This high-temp ring is in there to help seal the exhaust gases as they exit the mid-pipe. To fix this, you may only need to get under there with 2x14mm socket wrenches (or 2x14mm box-ends) and tighten that connection up a bit.

While you're under there, look at the rubber hangers, which are just a 'figure-8' rubber piece with metal inserts in each end. These usually crack at the middle section and the rubber then drops freely, allowing the exhaust system to move around a lot more than it's designed to. Any muffler shop will be able to replace these for you for a minimal fee, or your local parts house should sell them for about $5 each. The time to replace them might be a consideration, though, since the muffler has 2, the mid-pipe has 1 at the rear axle, and the the cat has one at it's exit that attaches to the tranny crossmember.

Have a look and let us know what you find,
