Mystery Part Fell Out of Carb. What is it?

What is it? And more importantly where does it go? Found it on my bench this morning under the carb snorkel. Would be nice to find out where it lives before putting snorkel back on. Seems to be a filter of some sort as made from fine metal mesh. Thanks!

Don’t see it on the Atkins carb rebuild diagram. Snorkel is the only thing I removed, and mystery part must be from the carb as bench was wiped clean before I put the snorkel on it. Has the same patina and look as the two small fuel filters that live right where the hard fuel lines attach to the snorkel.

Never mind. Just blew air threw the fuel lines and another filter just like the mystery one flew out of the recess where the needle seat threads in. Good job I saw it fly and watched where it landed! All good.

The factory manuals might be clearer, with better illustrations to identify mystery parts with. Available at foxed.ca

Oddly they don’t show on that Foxed diagram either. It’s not the two filters that can be accessed from the top of the snorkel, under the bolts to at attach the hard fuel lines to the top of the snorkel. It’s two smaller but similar metal mesh filters that are accessed by removing the needle seats and that sit between the tops of the seats and the snorkel. They are a elongated top hat shape closed at one end.

Now I am all paranoid they should not be there! But they certainly look a similar material to the filters that sit on top of the snorkel, and look a similar age. Car ran really well with them in place previous to the carb rebuild so just going to put them back where they came from.

Maybe 28? "assemblies" and has three pieces. What is that thing that looks like it goes inside the needle?

At least that's what my weed-clouded mind keeps looking at, heh. Good luck!

Close but no cigar. I am sadly very familiar with that assembly of spring, needle and clip as wrestling with a sticky needle. Filter I am all confused by would sit vertically above assembly 27, above the seat and crush washers. A mystery indeed.

The are little filters that fit on the inlet end of the needle seat. The first picture is like what you have and the second one is a "fancy" one that I found in one of my spare carbs the other day while scavenging other parts.

This is like yours.

This one is "fancy" and I have no idea if it is common.

Cheers,

Carl

Carl. On the fancy one, is that amber colored shaft rubbery/flexible? Would make sense as would hold the filter onto the seat. I can totally see the regular filter falling off... The fit to the seat is barely friction and the recess the seat threads in to is deep enough for the filter to fall off.

Yes. The amber colored stuff is kind of rubbery. It seems like a much more elegant solution than the simple metal screen. At the same time, the screen is sitting on top of the needle seat and fuel flow will generally "press" the screen onto the seat. Not sure where you could even find either kind now. I think the fancy one came from an FB carb and the simple one came from an SA. Not sure if that means anything though.

You don't need them if you have sufficient filters before the fuel gets in the carb. For a modified nikki, removing the inlet filters (shown in Torukis post below) and these small needle seat filters is done to help with overall fuel flow.
