Well just got done with the bumpers, everything on the front bumper looks good. I had a huge amount of deep rust in the bumpers so i used a 4 inch grinder and ground down to solid metal then used Evercoat Metal Glaze and filled everything in then use 220 grit and 320 grit paper and smoothed everything out and reshaped some areas to the original.


I shot the primer using Nason 421-19 2K Urethane primer mixed 4 parts primer to 1 part Nason 483-87 Urethane Activator.



I shot 3 coats and waited the recommended time and then shot 2 coats of Nason Ful-Base color.



Then shot 3 coats of Smart Polyurethane clear.


I decided to go with 3 coats being the bumpers take so much abuse. And its a good thing that i did because i ended up slipping and getting to close at one spot on the rear bumper and got a little run but heck with the way the passenger door is with the little bit of sag i plan on wet sanding and buffing the whole thing anyways. But for now the bumpers are done and look good enough to mount on the car. I am letting them set up for a couple days and cure so there is no chance of easy damage.

 

Congratulations! That's a gorgeous piece of work. Does my heart good to see another FB (and an SA at that!) coming back to restored state.

The black trim is painted with a semi-gloss and I found it at Home Depot in a rattlecan. Just make sure it's compatible with your primer (test on a piece of scrap). I've gotten incompatible paints occasionally if they aren't from the same maker.

 

I love that color, I am usually not one for blue too.

Well hopefully i can finish it this weekend I just got my weatherstripping and taillights seals, and window channel trim. worked great, i got it all from Black Dragon, it was a bit pricey but it was a nice product and fit perfect. now just have to paint the windshield trim and put my new clips on, then slide on the trim.


i will take some pics of this also and hope to have it updated by sunday..

That is a really nice job and I love the color! You have a lot to be proud of!
And if the dust is only in the clear coat, I suspect it will be near invisible after sanding and buffing.

Yea I normally don't like dark blue but this one has really nice highlights of brightness on curved surfaces in the light.

 

Not sure how I missed this thread, but very good work! I love the color, and its great to see another one being restored. Cant wait to see it together.

Haha, I think the "herd" has already been thinned out enough for that, the more restored the better, I still wanna be able to get parts 20 years from now!

 

Well after driving it over the weekend and have as much fun as a little kid, i finally brought it home and gave it a bath, i have not put the trim around the windshield on yet just because im waiting on wet sanding it and buffing the entire car. but here are some pics.

Nice - I did the same thing last year when I finished mine!

And sadly, I am 47, but I still drove it around like when I was 23 and I had bought my first RX - I did 60 miles the first night cruising the area after picking up at 7pm!

Funny thing is it is a lot harder to get in and out of now for some reason.

When does the interior get done (or is it?)

 

I got to see it in person this past weekend (and meet Rob). It looks good. He did a real nice job on it. I love the color too.

thanks for all the compliments guys, means alot since i did it myself. The only thing is now for some reason my wipers stay on all the time except when my lights are flipped up, they dont have to be on just have to have them flipped up???

Yep. I thought that I should have sent a pm to you. I didn't know how close you were to Statesville, though. I went down to help Daniel (therx7guy666) work on his '80 LS in Morganton. We are slowly getting it back on the road. I spent some time with Sam (went to dinner). Stu came by for a bit and we went over to Rob's to get a couple parts, see the paint, and to meet him. Anyway, I'll be back down probably in a few weeks. Need to fix some things on my 7 first. Maybe I'll hit the crossroads meet in April. I also want to hit the old guys meet towards the end of this month. I'm also interested in going to DGRR. Hopefully I can get her fixed up and back on the road by then.

 

just found this thread... great job restoring your 7! I'm hoping to have a nice big garage some day to play around in similar to yours. By the way, where did you get the carb hat and cold air intake from? Didn't see it mentioned in this thread.

Almost forgot, did you end up painting over the por15? i'm getting some for my engine bay right now and i'm wondering how many coats of paint i'll need to cover up all that black
