My stripped down Nikki - PICS

Here are pics of my stock Nikki stripped down as promised. I still am not sure what the exact purpose of the throttle sensor. If anyone knows if I can remove it, please let me know. The throttle sensor is in the 4th pic, with the 2 or 3 pronged plug attached to it. Also, if anyone knows if I can remove the small canister thing in the 2nd pic (with the large plastic vac line attached to it) that would be nice also. Please note that my carb has the entire choke system removed from it. That part really cleaned up the carb.

You can now understand how small the Nikki carb really is. Also I have converted to mechanical secondaries and therefor removed the part that opens them by vacuum.

Any questions, let me know. I will be glad to answer as many of them as I can.

One other thing I should mention is that I removed the dashpot. This seemed to help with the "shooting of the flames" as most people seem to like. The dashpot can be adjusted so the throttle does not "slam" shut, but removing it was easier and I have seen no ill effects as of yet.

so now that makes me wonder, Can I just take my carb off and follow your pictures to strip it down? What all did you have to sacrifice to get it down that far?

As far as I know, you can safely remove the throttle sensor. I can't think of any reason to leave it on.

The canister thingy is the altitude compensation valve (not sure if that the exact name, no manual in front of me). Just make a block-off plate and yank it too.

It IS a lot smaller without all that stuff on it, huh? Sexy, nekkid nikki. Ok, not sexy, but nekkid.

I don't know what the throttle sensor does EXACTLY, but I do know if you're going w/o a rat's nest you can safely get rid of it.

Rx7Carl/Sterling carbs don't come with one.

The Canister in the second pic is your Altitude Compensator. If you remove that you have to find a way to plug the vac holes under it. Its purpose (as the name suggests) is to compensate a little bit for changes in altitude so that you don't have to get out and change jets to go from the praries to the rockies kinda thing. My Rx7Carl carb doesn't have one of those either.

Good Job.

I'll post pics some day of how to do this... maybe.

Once the carb is down to this, it's SOOOO much easier to understand how to rebuild it.

Check out how sexy this Nikki is

as you can see, yours is nearly as stripped already. Not as tweaked-out, but still much better than the stock carb.

The pre-Rx7 Nikki carbs have less stuff on them and are more tidy. I had a Rx-3 carb back in the day. And their manifolds are simpler with better runners and no shutter valve

Yes, TPS you can remove with no prob, as it is emissions related.

On the canister with the vacuum line attached, all I know is my Sterling carb doesn't have it, so...

If this thing isn't going on an IT car why don't you pull out the booster venturies and clean the outside surface up(there is a casting line about 1/3 the way down that you can smooth. And you can narrow up the arm that holds it too and make it wing shaped with the blunt end on top. And no this isn't a guess, my Superflow 110 says it works.

Eventually it will get sent to Carl. I am pretty low on funds so I am doing as much as I can on it now so when it is sent out, it will hopefully not be gone as long. I will be taking my TPS and altitude compensator off as well.

Dan S Young - The only thing I took off and should have thought of a better way to do it was all the cable connections to the carb. I removed all the extra ones on the throttle. I removed the fast idle arm, as well as all the rest of them that I am not sure what are for lol. Also the hot and cold start assists were connected to that area and I removed the eyelets that the cables connect to them also.

The booster mod can be done with some wet/dry sand paper and a file. It's really simple and hard to screw up. They are a press in fit, just take off the top, wiggle them back and forth while pulling up. When you look at them you will see how simple it is. Don't mess with the inside shape as a rookie. Just think that this is where air goes by any piece of your car the fastest. You can also remove the arm that holds the booster in line on the opposite side from where the fuel comes through. Find some at the junkyard to mod then put them in your car. Don't be scared this is basic, easy stuff and will save you bucks for now. Keep a set of them for when you send the carb off later, Carl might have some different voodoo magic that he needs stock ones to start with.

I'll see if the guy that has my car with this mod can take a picture for you.

Well build one like I did man! As far as the losing an apendage, you gotta be real careful with it. I've had a few mishaps with it. None involving my genitalia for you pervs out there. Lets just say bad things happen when it's going full tilt and the throttle snaps closed.

Carl, Be-A-Utiful carb. Nice vacuum cleaner too. Does your bench suck and blow? Easy now guys, thats actually a technical question! My bench is gathering dust right now, I haven't been racing for a number of years but I now have time AND money(at the same time!!!) and have a new car under construction. The Superflow will be dusted off and fired up again soon.

Sounds interesting, but confusing too.....

Any chance that you could walk a CarbMoron through this process? Pics would be awesome if available. I just got my carb running right for the first time in 1 1/2 years, now I need to find a way to mess it up again!

Dude... Is there enough room to take the fuel inlet and mount it 180 degrees from where it is?

My FPR is mounted on the firewall on the passenger side, just a little further than the carb. If the inlet was pointed back the other way it would clean up my fuel lines incredibly!

OK, excuse me for being the stupid new guy, but who is carl? I assume he is a carb rebuilder, but I would like some details. I'm honestly a little reluctant to get into my nikki because I'm unfamiliar with carbs all together, and if there is some one I can send it to that can upgrade it a little, I'm interested.
