My radio fried my clock and hazards?
Hey guys,
I'm clueless again, so you all know where I turn to....
I was trying to hook up the 2nd gen radio I got into my 85gs and I think I fried some stuff. I was plugging some stuff in and the sparks started flying. I'm guessing that I hooked something up wrong. ;-)
The clock on the dash no longer works, unless you turn the lights on. You can see it at night when it is illuminated red. Also, the button for the hazards doesn't work at all anymore. I checked my fuses, but they all appear to be okay. What have I fried and why does the clock work only with the lights on and illuminated? I'm stumped!!!

Sounds like you improperly scavenged your power wire from the center console area for your radio. Therefore everything still works when it gets illumination power (or something along those lines). I swear, everyone hack jobs their radios - doesn't anyone have any pride anymore?

if you used a lead from any of the lights or anything hooked up to the illumination, it could be a problem with your dimmer switch....
And Pratch, I definately agree... either install your stereo properly, using the correct harnesses/connectors, or take it to a stereo shop and dish out the $45 to get it done there.

I've got a little more sympathy than you guys, I guess...
Have you seen the wiring harnesses they sell for first gens??
Mine was labeled and came in a professional looking package with a manual. The manual was all wrong, and so were the labels, and 2 of the connectors were outright wrong.

Screw the harnesses, but yes - use your Haynes (or preferrably FSM) to properly label the leads, and patch them well.
I'm not looking forward to having to solve the wiring problem on the 82 that rendered the cigarette lighter inoperable (since fixed) and that left about 4 wires uncapped...
At least I won't have to worry about it until it's actually running again
