My new RX-7, is this a good deal?
Does anyone know this RX-7 / guy?
Clicky
It's ebay item number 4542267698 if the link doesn't work.
I won the auction, but I'm nervous about getting a vehicle sight unseen from out-of-state. Does ayone know this guy or know the shop that did the engine rebuild.
Does this seem like I got a good deal, or did I just shaft myself?
I've got an old '83 with most of the interior pieces intact that I can swap over, then I plan on parting it out.
He sent me this description on email
You hadn't asked why I'm selling this car, but many others did; it's simply that I'm ready for V-8 power again, I bought a 1994 Mustang GT that I plan to setup just like the Mazda with a rollbar, safety harnesses, upgraded suspension, tires & brakes and be able to drive it to & from autocrosses and track day events.

If you are not familiar with rotarys, they run small oiling tubes into the carbs & burn oil with the gas mixture. The new RX-8's are actually having some major, major oil consumption problems with the new engines, but that is not a problem with this car. If it sits for a while and you have to use the choke to start it, it blows a little black/blue/gassy smoke for a couple of seconds until it clears out whatever was sitting in the engine & carbs. I haven't run a compression test on it, but the seals, oil pressure, water temperature, all are very stable even when the car has been run hard. The engine probably has around 4,000 miles since its rebuild and was rebuilt by the best rotary guy in our region, Bret DePedro of Rotary Performance in Manassas, Va. Cost of rebuild was around $2,000 and that did not include removal or installation; see RP Performance for Bret's site. These Guys know 1st Gen RX-7, 2nd Gen RX-7 & now Miatas inside and out.
Other major upgrade was the 15" wheels from ROH; 1st gen RX-7's have a 4 x 110mm bolt pattern where most imports have 4 x 100's. You can get anything for 4 x 100, but 4 x110 limits the selection to about three or four types of wheels. These ROH Snyper wheels are discontinued and cost about $600 last year & the new Falken Azenis were around $300. You cannot believe the handling, cornering or upgraded looks that these wheels and tires give this car.

That is a killer deal. If that car is even HALF of what the descriptions and pictures make it out to be you've nailed an amazing deal there.
The ROH rims alone are bloody expensive. He's running an aftermarket carb setup, and a rebuilt engine.
To put things in perspective, I've spent almost 5g CDN restoring my '84GS, and the only upgrades I've managed to make are springs/shocks, carb, and fuel system.
My take is that even if you had to dump another thousand into this car on your own you'd still be up with a killer car. Chances are since it seems to be well driven and loved, you're looking at a car that won't cost you more than cosmetics.
We'll see what other people say, but congrats, and welcome to the forum, I hope you stick around.

If I stick around is partly based on whether or not I can sell this
though if I find a job soon I can manage to keep both the GT car and the sports car. And the pickup truck and the motorcycle. Oh damn I've got to omany cars....

Cool. I'll be driving down to pick it up on the 25th, so less than a week.
I've got a tow dolly rented and I figure I'll just trailer it back up here with my pickup. That way, just in case it doesn't run right, I won't be straded in the middle of nowhere.
I worry a little about the fact that he says it smokes a little, but rotaries should smoke a "little" just one persons definition of a little may be different than the other persons.
ALso, he "lost" the paperwork for the rebuilt motor. Which seems wierd to me....
I'm excited!
