My new project

Greetings,

I recently picked up this rx7 for about 100-200 bucks (the estimated value of the holly carb i traded for it) and as you can see it needs more work and money than any 1 liner joke i can currently think of.

I started the body work and just tore out the front end today. The car had every reciept the original owner had for everything ever done to the car. It was some italian gal from what i can gather and she took damn good care of the car. Then this high school kid bought it from her and desecrated this fine machine for 1 registration period before abandoning it.

Now you have the history on my car , heres the pics of the victim.

I would like to use this thread to ask questions and report progress on my machine. I appreciate your time and advice on this topic.

I cant get the img thing to work. isimply dont know how to do it i guess.

Doing wheel bearings and bushings today, might get to the undercoating aswell.

She runs quite well actually, i was very surprised. When i founder the clutch pedal was on the floor and the battery had froze to an almost round shape. i bled the clutch installed a battery changed all the oils aired up the right rear flat and drove it home.

Shes an 1983 gsl, loaded, power windows, power mirrors, cruise, rear disk brakes, a/c etc etc.

I would like to put a sport/street raceing suspencion set up , new springs shocks strut up front etc. wheres best place to go? ive looked but dont know what im looking at so to speak. i just dont want to pay too much for something thats not the best. i work long shifts and like the car so i just want whatever the best is.

Tokico shocks seem pretty good, most people seem to get them. Also for Springs you can go with Racing Beat (racingbeat.com) and also I have noticed alot of people have Eibach springs. I personally have the RB springs and like them very much.

parts are hard to find.

I cant find these tension rod bushings any where. What a drag.
Also would like to know if this oil leak is common and if its gonna be as much a bitch to fix as it looks. it seems to be coming from the seam that the distributor goes into and the rotor plate thing. . I'm guessin ill have to split the engine.
Managed to get some undercoating done but im on hold till some more parts show up.

nice find! no rust in the fenders! thats a common oil leak called the dowel pin leak which is an o-ring inside between the housings that dries/cracks from age and is just annoying. only way to fix it is to do a rebuild. good luck and have fun with your new addiction! welcome to the forums too!

cant edit?

i cant edit my posts anymore? As for the dowel pin leak, that blows . I talked with bill at MRC manufacturing and it sounds like im going to be dropping in a 13 b turbo 2 motor, I really wanted turbo and injection any way. apparently my 12a irons will fit it. sounds like a relativly easy swap., i did however get a suspension kit ordered , back to sanding till parts get here.

i may split the case and just replace the o-ring, till i save up 4 the 13b. Can i do this with a tube of right stuff and a o ring ? or will i haVE to buy kit.

do turbos have to have special impellors to deal with the higher exhaust temps rotarys produce?

is there a link to a thread about putting a 4 port/6 port 13b in a FB with turbo and injection? i have a ton of questions about it.

this forum has helped a ton, thank you all.

well yes u can rebuild it. but maybe lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer will help slow or even stop the leak for you? its really thick petroleum that can crawl into cracks normal oil cannot and lubricates the rubber o-rings back up. its worth a shot. always good recomendations on this product.

progress

well its been over 3 weeks and 500 bucks and i finally got part of the r.f suspension rebuilt. heres some pics of the progress. i still have lost sleep over the oil leak but i have a engine gasket set and a rotor kit coming from mazda trix. likley ill just do some minor porting clean it up good and reassemble. I'm thinking im just gonna turbo charge and fuel inject the 12A she was born with. I'll be useing a megasquirt fuel managment system and go with distributerless ignition.

Any way heres where im at with the front end. its almost done. then i get to start on her behind. no pun intended.

compare these new pics with the ones i started with. the body needs alotta work still but a storm system came through and i had to prime and seal on short notice.... only minor back tracking to right that but owell.

please tell me what you think, your opinions are welcome and ideas are even more welcome. Especially concerning turbo charging. I.ve donbe some research and it seems to me that the way to go on the rotor kit will be all aviation componets. i priced ceramic apex seals and about **** myself. what do you reccommend for 13.5 pounds of boost?????

new springs, bushings, ball joints, shocks, wheel bearings , seals. strut mounts and spring seats. tie rod ends idler arm bushings .etc.etc.

Did i mention that i love this car

i'm impressed with your enthusiasm. You are working in tough conditions there...sand, weeds, uneven surface. The outdoors. I did it once and promised myself never again. I now only work in a garage on an even smooth surface. I've had enough of parts gettin fouled up in the sand or losing a smaller washer/nut/circlip.

well its noit that bad.. i wet the area around the car and the dust goes away. also i live in colorado so i get more sunny days than most any other state.

working in the dirt sucks i agree. you cant see it in the photo but my shop is under construction off to the right behind photographer. when the wind is nil and the sun is hot i shoot paint. Also everything is built in the little shed there. I made damn sure nothing hit the dirt. all i have to do is apply the assemblies to the car in the elements. the actual internals are done indoors.

I know what you mean about the dust. I have enough problems with when painting in the shop. I lay down old sheets that are soaked in water, still get dust from the incoming air used to vent the fumes out.
