my first RX7, wont run

i finally got my favorite car in the whole world, an RX-7, i havent even gotten to hear it run yet, its along story but in short, last year a hurricane here in florida blew the car port it was under away and the hood was up, soaked the engine bay and it wouldnt fire, after the previous owner let it dry out and changed the plugs and wires, it ran for a week then wouldnt start back, i just got the car today and its my first ever rotary, i finally found the firing order and found out that it was wrong, fixed it but it still wont crank. i have just 2 questions, will the wrong plugs being in the car cause this problem (the proper plugs are on the way) and second, when i pulled the plugs it seems like when you turn it over, its just dumping a huge amount of gas into the engine, is this right? or is the fuel processor regulator bad?

getting fire and gas, 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE Targa7, fuel injected

thanks in advance

Does it turn over when the plugs are out? Using the wrong plugs, depending on what they are, can protrude too far into the engine and jam the apex seals (very bad). Start by fully charging the battery (nearly impossible to jumpstart a rotary with a dead battery in it), and remove the alternator and take it somewhere that does free testing. That's a start anyway. And welcome to the forum!

im not new to cars, i have been building and driving race cars since i was 16, im just new to this rotary thing, the plugs fit just fine and the engine turns over and even tries to run, but the spark plugs in the car are normal bosch platinum plugs that you run in an ordinary piston engine, i do know that the plugsfor the RX are different, just wondering if these plugs are capable of running the engine, the battery i put in it to crank it is brand new, i havent checked the alternator though, ill do that today

the engine did run awhile ago with these plugs in it, then it just wouldnt crank back one day, i know its something simple, i just havent found it yet, i also dont know much about the basic maintenance of these engines, anywhere online that could help with that? i plan to buy a chilton or haynes book for it once i find one, may have to order that aswell lol

oh and yayo, i may not have started out with a running RX7, but its a pretty brave assumption to say i will never have a running RX7, i guarantee it will be running by the end of this week

Its probably flooded, you need to remove the plugs, crank it to clear the chambers of all the gas, clean the plugs, put a small amount of oil in through the plug holes, rotate the crank by hand so that all the seals get some of that oil on them, put the clean plugs in and see if it fires up.

See the FAQ in this section for more details on getting an RX7 started thats flooded or been sitting for awhile. Typically, they need to be started a few times a yare or they act up and get hard to start or can be flooded very easily.

Welcome to the forum.

Becareful what sparkplugs you use on any rotary engine. I only use NGK's because of some serious damage I seen caused by "other" plugs to the apex seals.

lol, getting it started is the easy part! Keeping it running is the hard part.

Besides, who buys a running rx7?

Check your getting a good spark, its obvious but a regular fault, both coils need to be in good shape and a drenching will wear them out real quickly.

you sure you got spark, if so charge your battery good or use one of those jump starting kitymbobs. i sugest you change your fuel, if it has been sitting for a while it WILL be bad and will NOT start, just drain the tank and put some fresh **** in and bleed the system, also get some carby cleaner and make sure all the linkages and moving freely.

RUNNING! finally got it running, put some oil in the spark plugs holes like the faq says, turned it over and put new plugs in it, fired right up, but it wouldnt rev past 2grand and there was pretty much no exhaist sound at all out the tailpipe, droped the exhaist and removed the guts from the car, it was clogged so bad water wouldnt even flow through but it runs great now, im amazed at how fast it actually is for a 20 year old street car, its as fast as my circle track race car and handles almost as good, and the lsd is tight, two even black marks everytime all day long

thanks for the help, if i need anything else ill be sure to come here first.

Good going. Keep in touch and check back in here regularly. this is the best car forum you can find and it adds a lot to the pleasure of owning a rotary to know that the answers to your questions are easily available.

Bullshit. I bought a not running 7 that wouldn't even turn over, (overheat) oiled it up and pumped it out the next day and it fired right up. I drove that car for 6 years without doing another thing besides routine maintanence.

i love these little cars, always been my favorite car and i finally found one that was in good shape for a good price, easy to find the body around here in junk yards but they never have engines in them, i had no idea the engines could be bought complete over the internet so cheaply though, cheap compared to the DOHC Isuzu 4 banger engines i race that is, i know this isnt going to be my last 7, ill have more before long

thanks everyone!
