my 1st gen sux
i dont know if there is anything wrong with it or what.Ive got a 85 gs 12a.It drives and runs and idles perfect.Rebuilt motor by haynes 10k miles ago.All stock except for a muffler.took off smog pump, plugged of the lines when i did that, took off a/c,replaced clutch fan w/ electric fan,and put 14" rims on it.I got beat by a saturn and a kia.Dont even get me started on hondas.I dont have much money to make it much faster but is it supposed to be this slow?

I don't know man, but my stock port was smoking all the hondas in site. A lot depends on how it is tuned up. An unproperly tuned street port can be as fast or slower than a stock port.

take off the stock manifold and cats and replace with a header and presilencer to go with your muffler - otherwise you still have serious exhaust restriction slowing you down

still stock port, any suggestions on how to tune it or what i should do besides the header?I just listed it for sale but if i can beat any hondas at all, i might keep it cuz its a really cool car and handles excellent.

That don't sound right! Are you sure the secondaries are opening up correctly? If they are not opening then you've got a cute little economy car, when they open my rex roars good! Search on mechanical secondary mod.

i was looking at other people who say they had mech. secondary problems and some say they topeed out at 85, i got mine to 110 and it wouldnt gone up alittle more.Thats when the kia whooped me.Sometimes the car pulls decently in the mid-high range, but sometimes when im flooring it,im looking at my tach and can see the rpm going up but its like my car isnt going any where.i was thiking fuel pump or filter at first but they seem fine.It idles at 750-850, and drives real smooth, but also got beat by my dad extended cab f150 4.6 auto.Id hate to sell it but need the speed.

yeah, tons of fast hondas, but i cant even keep up with a slow one.I just went outside, took off the top of the air filter housing, started the car and looked in the carb.I gave it some gas and kept giving it gas but didnt see the secondaries opening.I dont know if they'll only open when they have load but how do i check if they working? That seems like it is the problem. If so how do i fix it?Just convert to mech?

i thought about it being the clutch until last night.I raced a v6 camaro, dumped it @ 5-5500 and got 'em real good off the launch, then right when i hit 2nd he flew past me and got about 6 cars by the end of 2nd.It doesnt seem to be slipping, just dying real bad at the top end between 5500-7000

Wiring the cecondaries together is easy, all you need is a wire tie. You can't really check the opening until the engine is under load with the stock vacuum opener. Mine pulls strong past 8K and it's stock as far as I can tell.

the 12a rx really does 0-60 in about 10 seconds in most condition...9 seconds if you get a good hook-up. I suspect as someone said, the secondary might not be opening up fast enough, you can check that by the linkage near the firewall on the passenger side. But best bet is to just Turbo 13b the car. You'll then will be complaining that it will keep spinning the tires in 1-3rd gear.

mine start lower then 6k with no load but I am just going on the safe side, 6k they should open.
sounds like one or both of these
1:fuel delivery
check fuel filter for rust deposits
check to make sure fuel pump is operating at proper psi rating
check secondaries as already stated above
check fuel line condition and for mulitple splicing or leaks
2:exhaust
replace cat with a straight pipe right off the bat with out any questions
look for a deal on a racing beat header or buy one new
your muffler is only making your car sound better until you replace these things mentioned above
good luck

.. if you still have the stock cats yet you removed the air pump then all you are doing is clogging the cats up. A 12A GS puts out about 100HP at the crank.. dont expect to be beating modified Hondas with double the horsepower.

If you still have your cats on there, most likely there are getting clogged up.
My 85 gs was killing V6 mustangs, Camaros, and most of the ricer Hondas around here This was before I did any mods....
Its a whole lot faster now... and gonna be a whole hell of alot faster in a few months.

If you can't afford a full exhaust run a cat replcement pipe. The next big fairly cheap thing is to replace the mechanical fan with and electic fan. The exhaust and the mechanical fan are the two largest power robers these cars came with.
Good luck, oh and don't be ashamed of the v6 camero, they are pretty fast.

i already replaced the fan w/ an electric. As soon as i get a chance im gonna get a header and take off the cats.I was gonna turbo it, i bought a bae turbo kit, but couldnt have my car sitting for long enough to install it.Ive still got it(minus the turbo and wastegate), ill trade it for a header, test pipe, and some drop springs.Maybe an aftermarket air filter too.

Here's a thought. What kind of spark plugs are you running? You need to be running NGK's. Also, when was the last time the cap, rotor and wires were replaced. I know you said you got a new engine, but they dont' always replace that crap.
Other cheap performance enhancers- K&N air filter, run 92 octane always, and use fuel system cleaner every now and then. and REPLACE THE FUEL FILTER.

I would think you could tell if the mix is starting to lean, you know that boggy sounding carb with no accel.
Header and high flow cat with RB muffler would help you gain some power. That's your biggest immediate gain for the dollar--and can be done emissions legal.
Pull some weight off the car.
Still these new cars with 250 HP are going to be tough for you to beat, but that's why they cost alot more.
Good Luck, Scott
