Which mufflers?
#2
Don't do what I did,, get a muffler that is made for the RX7. Cause I bought one of those fancy import mufflers and it worked nice for about a month. The sound got progressively louder and louder. I have a header and you can't hold a conversation with a chick in the car. What happens is they burn out inside cause of the extreme heat. X-tec makes a nice muffler and it's fully rebuildable and the insides can be removed for racing and put back in for street. Saber exhaust makes mufflers specific to whats been done to the rx7 example n/a or turbo, ported or not. The better companies like apexi and hks have rx7 specific mufflers avaliable. I do think that flow master can handle it too. Some guys are running them on this forum.

I stongly reccomend using an RX-7 specific muffler, as the VERY high exaust temps from the rotary will eat a normal muffler right quick. I'm just trying to decide between the Rotary Performance and the Racing Beat exaust systems myself.

The POS Racer came with a flowmaster welded onto the end of a stock exhaust, which appears to be off, an 83, since it’s a single pipe with only two catalytic converters. I like the sound of it, but I agree with the fact that a standard muffler will burn out on the heat load of a rotary. Notice its a bit louder then when I got the car this spring.

I called Flowmaster once and talked to a tech rep. The dude wouldn't even try to sell me a muffler for a Rotary. They haven't had much luck, and apparently they do burn out in time.
Anything stainless steel will last forever, even on a rotary. With that said, BORLA is a good company to check out. These are expensive, but race proven.
I don't know which direction to take myself. Since this is a non-standard application for a Rotary, the configuation will be all custom.
I wonder how size of the expansion chamber of the muffler will effect the exhaust note?

The Power Pulse from RB is a good choice - very well built with an excellant tone and good flow for those with a header (street application) - pricey though, around $250 US - nice thing about it is it's bolt on and made specifically for a rotory. Most everything else I've heard (other than some custom stuff) are either too loud for street or they won't hold up against the heat.

I've got a Dynomax SuperTurbo for my muffler with a custom made header and stainless steel piping and stainless steel cat and it sounds deep and sweet.
I can try to record the sound and post it up

yup, i got one. they're cheap... moneywise and construction wise. i tried to save a few$$$ and for the money, its not too bad. you do see an increase in hp. but after looking closer at them when i got 'em, you could see where they cut corners. especially inside the collector. the remainder of both header tubes is still in there. kinda looks like a partially open clam shell. if those had been cut out, the flow would increase dramatically, i'm sure. now i look back, i wish i'd have just saved up for the rb's tho'. i know i'll have to replace these within 5 years

I've got a Monza muffler, had it for about a month now and I've put about 1,000 miles on it. It's with a factory header and OEM cat, and so far, so good. It has a nice burble and is about half again as loud as the stock muffler. Can't guarantee anything about longevity, but they waranteed it for a year so I gave it a try for about $120.

i forgot to mention that the paint on the headers burns off. i thought my car was on fire on my way home from the exh shop. burnt paint really stinks! after a month or so, they're bare metal. just a little rusty looking.

Just want to second (or third or fourth) DON'T get a cheapo muffler.
I bought a $15 2.25" turbo muffler for $15. That's right $15. You know, aluminized mild steel construction, crimped seams instead of welding... I figured if it lasted a month it'd be fine, because it had a 1-year warranty.
First of all, it sounded like crap. It sounded like a blimp deflating through a fart-cannon, just a nasty, toneless blaaaaaaaaaaat instead of the normal, wonderful high-pitched chainsaw sound effects. I was embarassed to drive it. A couple eraserheads in a stickered, slammed, 17" wheeled Civic gave me the thumbs up, convincing me that it SUCKED.
Second of all, barely 24 hours after I installed it, it BLEW OPEN. 70 miles with an open exhaust gets old VERY fast, especially trying to drive as quietly as possible at midnight to avoid (another) noise ticket.
I now have a stainless steel muffler off of a (chuckle guffaw laugh) '89 Lincoln Continental. 1.75" exhaust baby! But the car runs within 2 tenths versus an open header (15.8 vs. 15.6) and it's quet enough that you can barely hear the engine at a 70mph cruise.

I have monza headers and exhaust, they work ok and the sound is better than my old 15 dollar muffler especially @high rpm's, its a good buy if your on a tight-based budget.....beware for paint flying off after installation and it'll smell like **** for a week or so
