Muffler questions
I just installed a RB header/presilencer combo into my '79 GS, retaining the stock muffler. I was hoping that the car would sound louder, but much the same as it did before.
I was wrong.
On startup, the car idle with a nice deep note, and at low revs, the sound is quite nice. But when I open her up even a little, the note changes to a high pitched tinny aural disaster.
How many of you have used stock mufflers with a header system? I have a sinking feeling that if I had an '81-'85 model car, I wouldn't have this problem, but my exhaust was tinny to begin with, and the headers seem to have amplified the problem, not eliminated it, like I had hoped.
Feedback would be appreciated from anyone who has used the stock muffler with a header system, especially someone with a '79 or '80 model.

The muffler is the last part of the exhaust system, and if it's restrictive then it will not help much if you have a free-flowing header because the muffler still restricts overall flow (does that make sense?). You get the nice sound at idle because the engine is not flowing a lot of air, but when you ask it to rev, it still chokes on that restrictive stock exhaust. I recommend you replace that with a free-flowing muffler (RB?) asap!
Or... you could just ditch the muffler(cost:free)!
