Muffler advice

I blew the seam out on my muffler due to a linkage binding key-off situation, and I need to get a replacement ASAP. I hammered a bunch of beer cans up in the opening, and it quieted down.
I posted a want ad on the parts for sale section, and got no replies. I sent PMs to some sellers, and have had no luck. I spent about 2 weeks driving on this thing, and I have had enough of it.

I dont mind the noise too much, but the open exhaust just dosn't sound right.

I have a few options at this point. A bosal bolt on, a walker bolt on, or an aftermarket tip. The only tip that looks decent looks like a muffler, but dont know if it will do any silencing at all.

This is the one I am thinking about.

Any comments would be helpful. I need to get something soon.

Borla 40348 Pro XS Muffler:Amazon:Automotive Borla 40348 Pro XS Muffler:Amazon:Automotive

Stock mazda tips will slide on this baby. Mine is preceded by a RB header, presilencer, and a magnaflow. But I'm old.

Is your exhaust stock?

it is stock of an 84 and I have an 82. The header back to just behind driver seat is aftermarket. It used to have a loud tip on there with 3" pipe. I had cut it just around where the stock muffler flange was and welded on a 3" to 2.5" reducer, and direct welded it.

Are you saying I could just cut the stock muffler off and weld this on.

I understand I'd have to cut it off and refab. the pipe. Then rehang.

What about hanger hardware? And what about tips?

I have no welding skills. I had the RB header and presilencer and stock from the seat back. I bought the magnaflow pack and the borla, had a muffler shop weld it up. The chrome tips from my stock mazda muffler fit on the borla.

I got a rock auto walker muffler on mine $130 bucks and it comes with the over axle pipe and flange. Suppose to be a direct bolt up. My exhaust is a bit 'fabricated' but that part was stock and it fit great. Sounds pretty nice too. Rock auto also has the rubber hangers and gaskets cheap.

I put together my exhaust for abut $200, not including the RB header.

I've got a 2.5" exhaust from the header back, with a Moroso Spiral Flow muffler and a cheap ebay stainless steel dual-tip resonator. It's a little loud but it sounds good and was cheap. Of course, I welded up my own pipes, so you may have to pay a bit more to get a shop to do it for you.

Why are you excluding Racing Beat muffler from your options?

I got an 85 GSL-SE Racing Beat muffler on the way. I have an aftermarket exhaust system from the header back. The last muffler I put on was an 84 GSL stock, but I cut the flange off and direct welded it.

I am trying to find another flange so I can weld a flange on to what I have now, and fit the muffler in place.

Thanks for all the info.

I got some other issues popping up I will post questions shortly Thanks fellas

I'll be going with a Magnaflow muffler here soon with the turbo swap. I'd have gotten a full Racing Beat system if I would have stayed 12a but that wouldn't have been as fun
