muffler?

'83gs, stock motor

ok, so I have a very tight budget for this car, but I also enjoy speed, so I have been doing all of the easy/super cheap stuff I can find out how to do

and last night those silly cats fell off my car(well the angle grinder helped a little) I would like to replace them with a glass pack and connect it up to the rear muffler to keep it quiet. I have read that the fiberglass packed mufflers don't last very long.....so what options do I have, this is not a daily driver car, but I don't want it to be realy loud either, would a universal "turbo" muffler be better?
oh and don't forget the budget thing

I doubt anything cheap and "universal" would last either.

Magnaflow makes a muffler similar to glass packs, but rather than fiberglass, its packed with stainless steel. They're called Magnapacks. I'm sure thay would last longer than the fiberglass.

Glasspack will not last. I have a very long cherry bomb on my car and it lasted not even a week.

once it burns out, is there any difference in it and a straight pipe as far as sound?

I just want it to not be realy loud at normal people speeds, don't mind if it gets loud at WOT

i put two mufflers inline, one is about an 18 inch long magnaflow straight through, that's steel packed, then i put a yoshimura motorcycler muffler as an end pipe. glass hasn't blown out with weeks of hard driving. sounds gorgeous, too.

Ok newbee question following:

Is a glass pack and a presilencer synonimous?

Or is a glass pack a type of presilencer?

I have a RB intake with Holley 4brl, headers, 12" (glass pack/???), and a MagnaFlow muffler. Looking to make it quieter.

so do you think it would sound "ok" with a glasspack where the cats were, and a stock type muffler out back?

I've got a racing beat presilencer that's had some pipes welded directly to it that I'd be willing to let go for $50 + shipping. You'd just need to do some welding to get it to fit. You can put the presilencer at the cat location and use the standard muffler. The car would be decently quiet.
