Is there a benefit to running an MSD ignition system on a first gen? Is there more or less of a benefit to running an MSG ignition on a 12a that has been FI'ed (turbo or supercharged)?
I'd do a search, but every time I do a search, I get an error, 503. =\

I have heard that the direct fire system is the way to go:

Driect fire, I checked their website out a bit ago.
I was going to stick an M62 on a 12a and want to be sure that i don't just blow the poor motor up the first time I turn the key. :p

Huge gains over the stock ignition system can be made with one MSD6A box and 3 Blaster coils.
The MSD box will power 2 coils easily for the leading plugs.Dual coils will take the juice directly to the plugs, eliminating the need for the distributor cap system and the accelerated wear that a hot ignition usually induces on the cap/rotor.Youll eliminate the troublesome 1st gen ignitor box at the same time, which is nice.
Also, youll be firing each leading plug twice per power cycle with the wasted spark type setup. This is identical to the stock FC and FD ignition systems.Plus, youll gain multiple sparks at lower engine speeds, which helps a lot with idle quality and cruise fuel consumption.
Little is gained from MSD'ing the trailing system and it can screw with the tach signal and fuel pump relay.I installed a Blaster coil and an MSD5 non capacitive box on the trailing and saw no gains.I also had to fork out for an isolator to keep my tach and pump relay working right.
You wont blow anything up,infact, the engine will thankyou with much better running.Just remember, you still control timing the same way as when stock,by turning the distributor,so make sure its right on.Also, keep an eye on your sparkplugs as they will wear out quicker with the MSD setup.I switched from NGK plugs to Nippon Denso's and saw much longer plug life after the switch.
