motor lock up?

I have a new starter, all components on the clutch replaced (flywheel is tight). The transmission and rear end are perfectly fine they dont make any noise.

So heres the thing the bolt to the air pump tensioner snapped so i removed the belt. when letting the car slow down in gear it backfires a lot, I assume because of too much fuel. (this is my first carb rotary im learnin but havin fun with it) I tried to tune the carb and i was getting the same results no matter whet i did. backfiring while down shifting.
Could excess fuel cause the motor to flood and lock up??? I cannot turn the motor with my hand, and i was pushed up to 25mph and popped the clutch and all it did was lock the rear tires up. Ive heard of that happening with a piston motor just wondering if the same thing can happen with rotary?
later today I am going to pull the plugs and check them along with my oil to see if it smells like gas at all. The motor to me did not sound like it seezed up or anything major like that, no squels or squeks have ever come out of this motor to give me any reason to believe that it blew, when it locked up it was coming down to an idle, it shut off at about 1000rpm and i dont beat the **** out of it. i treat it with the respect an RX7 deserves

See if you can turn the front pulley by hand (make sure its out of gear, of course).

If you removed the air pump, then you are going to have some issues. Either replace it, or follow the instructions in the FAQ for the complete removal of the emissions systems (Rat's nest removal)).

I suppose it could have carbon locked. Check the FAQ's and archives for the test proceedures for carbon lock. Carbon locking is more common on high mileage engines, when they are only started for a very short time then shutoff, but I suppose it could happen while running.
I doubt it this had anything to do with simply removing the belt from the air pump.

The backfiring on deccel is common with the air pump disconnected, and the rats nest still in place.

Try turning the engine over backwards via the front pulley. If it won't turn at all, you've tossed a seal.

no i cannot turn the motor over at all with my hand, I even pulled all spark plugs out and tried to hand turn the motor. So i have a dead motor? When seals go bad they lock the motor up?

not all the time ........ but if you get lucky when the seal goes bad it gets jamed up on the housing and rotor and is kinda like a tire chalk woot. it also dents/fucts the housing and rotor......... also i was bein a smart *** when i said if you get lucky .........when apex seals go bad they can go out the exhaust port or the bad witch is what you have they get jammed up in the rotor/housings...

the plus side is they are not a hard motor to take apart/ put together you can do a lil porting and get a housing/rotor for a fair price good luck let me know what parts you need once you get the motor apart... unless you have the letter N stamped on your rotors if thats the case i will buy the good 1 from you

If you followed the testing proceedures for the carbon lock, and still cannot get the motor to turn over, it has likely either lost an apex seal, or spun a bearing. Neither are very pretty, and both require a full teardown to correctly diagnose. Either condition will almost always ruin a few parts inside the engine, increasing the cost to rebuild it.

You might be better off cruising the salvage yards for another motor. You can usually pick one up for a couple hundred bucks, and have it installed in a day or less. Good luck...
