morning woes
anyone else have a " i dont want to wake up car", with the cooler mornings here my 7 gsl wants to sputter and smoke at first crank up. it usually cranks on first try with the choke about half to 3/4 out but it sputters and burns oil for about 1-2 minutes, then its smooth as ever, i did look down the carb throat one time and notice that the fuel seemed to be dripping out instead of spraying out, but if you goose it, it does spray, dont know if this has anything to do with the sputtering or not, this is no biggie either but was just curious if anyone else has a sluggish morning start. and has a fix that worked for them.......

I also dread waking my baby from her beauty sleep.
She fires up on the first crank, everytime, but sputters. I usually give her a couple of revs up to about 3k to get some of the bubbles out of the fuel system (or so i suppose). Only smokes for about 15 seconds for me tho.
My choke is kind of on the funky side, so i have to prop it open with a nickel to keep it at about 2k until she warms up. When it's almost warm, something peculiar happens tho - the engine speed will slowly drop at idle and eventually die if I let it.
Dunno, i was gonna get an oil pan heater, but i just moved into an apartment complex where i won't be able to get to a power outlet anywhere near my parking spot.
Anyway...I too would like to know if there's a way to help her out in the morning...especially the sputtering.

Mine cranks for a few cranks, but she starts. She's garage kept now, so starting her up is a lot easier. I have to pump the pedal a few times and pull the choke out, then she's good to go. No smoke, just smooth idle at 2600 RPM's for 30 sec then I adjust the choke til it's about 1500 RPM's.
Rexy dies sometimes too , if it's pretty cold out. After a few miles of driving she doesn't stall at red lights. I can't understand why, but I just live with it. The car is going on 17 years old, I expect to have a few minor glitches.
Driving her more than makes up for it.

Mine use to stall in the cold weather until I have the ground cable replaced. Since then I have not had any problems. I have to pump the gas 2 times in the summer and 3-4 in the winter to get her started. I then let it idle at 2k like my owners manual recomends. No smoke or anything

Mine sputters for about a minite and smokes for about 15 seconds then funs smooth as ever- strange thing is though only when its below about 60 degress outside my rpm gauge will'nt work. I go to school from 7:30 to 11:00 come out start my baby -sputters, smokes and runs fine like always just now that it has wormed up the rpm guage works. Strange-? Anyone have that happen?
Also have any of you guys took the heat guard off of the starter when switching engines and not put it back and had problems stating ur rex after shes been turned off for about 30 min's but if she sits a couple hours she starts fine? Or if you come back in 15 min's or so she starts fine? Well just curious-

It sounds like you have a weak tach wire to the trailing coil. If a wire gets old and brittle, it will not conduct very well, cold weather makes it even worse.

Hmmm you know that stupid shutter valve that makes strange sounds over 4.5 K for some people? . . . like me. When i start mine it make that sound and i have to warm up my car for at least 5 minutes. At night right now it gets down to about -4 Celcius so i think about 25-30 Fareinheit.

I have read the owners manual to mine and it says to pull the choke all the way out and start. You should the adjust the choke until you are at 3000 rpm and leave it there for 30 seconds. after the 30 seconds you take her to 2000rpm. When she reaches operating temp she will suck the choke in. Now mine wont quite make it to 3000rpm without a little gas, I know how to fix it but I have been waiting for an engine swap. You have to bend your fast idle rod until it hits 3000. Now when my rx-7 was brand new it would smoke for 10 seconds after start-up and the salesman said that was normal for an RX-7.

Donna,
First of all, if possible park the car where te sun will shine on the hood! After much trial and error I found this process works best for my '84: Pull the choke out at least 3/4ths of the way, DO NOT pump the gas, just turn it over, rev the engine a few times until all the
"blue smoke" clears up! You should be fine then.
