more newbie crap

ok so robert goes out and buys an 83 rx7 gsl! yay! and now thanks to the smog natzis i have to pass a smog test. i have new plugs, cap, and rotor (still in box)

im wondering if these cars generally have any problems passing. what if anything would make me not pass? the only mod I've made is a dynoflow muffler (its louder with the "muffler" than without).

Also what can i do to add a little more power and still stay legal?

only 18 and not rich!

pls help with any info on the smog crap.
it started may 1st and i dont know what to expect.

Passed with flying colours

Oh and changed the oil that morning

That is my exspeience I hope it helps you

Good luck and enjoy your new car

Well, it depends on what the person before you has done to it. If it doesn't have a cat, you won't pass. My friend didn't know his car didn't have a cat till he looked under it checking something, and saw that there was a pipe welded where there should have been a cat. So check for that, and check for the air pump. Where I live we don't have emissions testing, so thank god I don't have to deal with that. Who needs an ozone layer anyway?

Haven't had to pass it because we don't need it in Quebec, but here's what I've gathered from others

1. You must have a cat. Not only that, your air pump must be working to provide that cat with enough oxygen to make it work properly at breaking down the smog.
2. Oil Change. Day before or day of the test (I suggest day before). Since oil is injected into the chamber, and it burns off, dirty oil will hinder stuff. Change the filter too
3. The reason anthrax "drove it like he stole it" was because driving it for a nice long run on a highway, with some nice high RPM helps clear some carbon and gunk out of the combustion chamber. Something you shouldn't do *too* often, but definitely a day or two before the test.

4. What alot of people do is buy a nice, clean, new cat, and install it only when they're being tested. The rest of the time they straight-pipe it or use an older cat (if they're students/moneyless). New cats are expensive, but worth it if you use it only for emissions testing, and it's the only way to get you back on the road.

5. Make sure that your rats nest is properly installed and no vacuum leaks are occuring anywhere. If you removed anything from your carb, or if someone before you removed stuff like that, make a plea in the sales section for what you're missing. Some guys will probably be able to spare it for really cheap since they probably don't need it where they are anyway.

6. Dunno if this is available around there, but here a gas station called McEwans sells Methanol-blended gas. It helps lower emissions and they actually advertise on the radio "Give your car a better chance of passing driveclean, fuel up with McEwans Methanol-blended gas".... Fill up at least two full tanks before the test to wash the old crap out.

Hope it helps,

Jon

Just confirming what vipernicus42 has wrote. I live in Ontario and we have to pass emissions here.

I wne through this whole procedure two years ago on my 82 and what vipernicus42 has written pretty much sums it up.

I am 17 minus 2 months and i don't know much about mods for these cars either.

but there are lots of stuff you can do to add power and stay street legal. you can look for good exhaust at:
www.racingbeat.com
www.bigexhaust.com
flowmaster is another company, can't think of the url.

theres lots of intakes and stuff you can get too...

not to mention turbos, but ask someone else about all that, i'm a newbie too.

full racing beat exhaust is about +20hp, k&N air filter adds a few (i guess) other than that you really can't do a whole lot with a 12a and have it pass inspection. stay away from flowmaster, they suck *** on a rotary.
