Question mid-location humming noise

Got tires put on today, and on the way home I was running about 40mph in 4th and started to hear a rather loud humming noise (not shrill, not very loud, but very obvious). Came to a stop and the sound lessened after 5-10 seconds. Started again and the sound returned, stopped and it lessened in 2 steps, both 5-10 seconds apart. Continued to make the sound for a few seconds even after the car was turned off.

Am I right that this is the fuel pump? Why would it start being noticable? is it starting to fail, and if so, how can I tell if it is time to replace it?

13b, stock.

thanks

For what its worth, you could locate the fuse for the fuel pump, pull it and see if the sound stops.

Fuel Pump sounds about right.

Before you go thinking it's dead, change your fuel filter RIGHT NOW. That's step one. Eric's fuel pump could be heard from quite a distance away until he changed the filter.

Could save you the cost of a new pump!
