just out of curiosity: how does everyone feel about sea foam? the other week my car had begun to smoke (black) fairly badly (still havent paid off the engine to get the electromotive sofware (running *way* rich) but i hope to get it paid off soon, if youre reading, jim) i had been running mobil 1 synthetic, and i switched to valvoline, and ran a can of sea foam through the intake. it smoked for almost 30 minutes. i figure it was the carbon from the rich condition, as well as the poorly burnt synthetic oil. thoughts anyone?

My guess is that it dislodged some "gunk" in the fuel system which caused a temporary blockage. I'm glad to hear that it cleared up. I guess that's one of the risks with cleaning agents and old cars.

So would you guys recommend MMO to a 79 12A that it had been sitting for 7 years? I drained and fill with coolant, changed the oil...etc..... Drove 300 miles will about 2 tankful of Chervon regular gas. It runs like a champ.

Or should I just use a little of bit at a time? Like half of the 16oz bottle into the fuel, and the rest into the oil.

nelam, go for it! Just don't be too hard on that engine for a while (high revs, etc), let it loosen up, it's been sitting an awful long time.

I just thought that I'd mention this......while at Pep Boys, I noticed that they sell Marvel Mystery Oil in a 1 gallon container. For those who use it regularly, it may be worth your time and money to get a large container of MMO.

I had my 83 stored for 3 years, changed all the fluids, etc., but the transmission whined 'til it roared and I replaced it this year. I think some condensation must have got to the bearings.

I started the MMO treatment last month, beginning with 2 oz working up to 8 oz per tank. The 83 is transformed! At idle it's so smooth you can't tell it's running. The 85 is getting a little better: the hesitation at 4k is disappearing, but it has a way to go to be as smooth as the 83.

Oil is a pretty good solvent (you can clean your greasy hands in fresh motor oil pretty good) so I'm not surprised that MMO dissolves goop in the fuel system and might even loosen a big particle that causes a momentary flow problem like one guy had.

I don't know how MMO compares to other super-lubes, like slick50, prolong, etc. That famous Consumer mag replicated the prolong experiment and the chevy engine froze after 13 minutes.

I think it probably pays to have some superlube in the lubes, so as to avoid the transmission problem I had, for instance. The superlubes seem to have better skin tension.

I don't know much about superlubes, like whether thay are compounds, or whether they're taken off the cracking tower at a particular place to have fewer contaminants than regulAR lube. Anybody know anything about this? They've been around a long long time, and we know they have some good qualities.

Slick50 has been proven in a number of sources to actually be harmful to your car's engine. Stay away from anything that has Teflon in it, it's bad news. Check out Felix Miata's site, he has a link to a page on 'snake oils. http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/cfaqmenu.html

It's a real eye-opener. Felix has a number of other great resources as well. Definately worth a peruse.
