That's correct, because the OEM 81-82 muffler starts with 2 pipes at its inlet. According to the old How to Modify Your RX-7 book it's the best flowing OEM muffler.

The joining of the tubes before they enter the muffler on the RB's really quiets it down. When I first did my exhaust I just got the headers and pre-silencers. I figured OEM muffler = quieter, because aren't all aftermarket mufflers for loudness? Man, it was so loud, tinny, and obnoxious, like Civic ricer obnoxious.

Just finished installing this system on my SE,had to bend brackets on muffler slightly to sit level in opening on rear valence, had to replace all hangers to get the system to fit properly, get creative on bending heat shields for clearance. There is considerable improvement in top end power but... the muffler sounds tinny, raspy, almost like maybe a baffle? loose inside it. Sound at idle is quieter than my oe exhaust. Disappointed at what i got for what i spent. Any truth to the system mellowing out with miles ? Have about 30 miles on as of now.

Wait. Shields were kept? In the times I have installed them, ALL heat shields had be to be removed/discarded.

I kept my shields but needed to trim front the edge of an 84-85 type. Also hammer up a couple of places.

Yes,had center section and muffler in/out several times to get everything to fit right, replace all hangers ($). Marked all places of contact on shields with sharpie and while system was removed,repositioned/bent as necessary. Initially considered removal, decided to keep them.

Installed the newer sp complete system yesterday and only had to the bend a few parts of the heat shield so it wouldn't touch the piping. Other than that everything went smooth. Overall it's not too loud really, it buzzes when you gun it but at lower rpms it does have a deep tone too. As far as the performance, it's like a whole other car! Before this exhaust I thought something was wrong with my carb or something, but now it's opened up especially the top end.
