Lessons learned

Manntis, from you I've learned that 1st gens are extremely resilliant when it comes to accidents and the like. Although I hope I never have to experience what you went through, I can expect if I use a certain amount of determination to keep the car from wrecking, but it does anyway that I will be able to walk away from it just as you did...on two occasions!!!
Pam's gone, but you live again to persue the rotary dream!
She will be missed.

One of the freaky things about me is I heal very, very quickly, physically speaking. The wounds on my hand and arm are closed and shrinking, the ones on my scalp and ear don't even exist anymore.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, me too. Don't be too happy. though. Healing is done by cholesterol, and the same cholesterol that heals you gives you atheriosclerosis: take it from the guy who had a triple bypass last year.

Manntis You are so friggin cool!
I'd be such a bitter little ****-ant if that had happened to me that it would have had to be pointed out to me just how lucky I was.
You really are an inspiration.
Again, no kidding- anything I can do to help you out. It's not "charity...poor Manntis", it's just well deserved.

Yes, I healed quickly from all my auto, motorcycle and bicycle crashes. I could feel the abrasions healing. Good cholestrol levels. Then that cholestrol filled my arteries between 55 and 65. Oops. Hellllooo bypass! Still heal quickly with all the lipitor and cholestid: last night I burned a finger with hotglue from the gluegun, and 24 hrs later it's almost healed.

I've only been upside down in a car once, and that was enough for me.
As far as combat and cancer, my papa is way ahead of me in both of those departments. (3 years in Vietnam with the Army, and fighting 4 kinds of cancer, plus brain tumors as we speak)
Still glad you're ok!!!!

Manntis,
That's a pretty harrowing story! I'm glad you came out ok, but sad my car lost a sister.
When I saw the other post wasn't written by you, I thought it was about someting else. Good to see you back on the forum!
I hope you find another SE to replace Pam. I thought I read in another post that you had convinced the Canadian gov't it was a national treasure and all
Hopefully the insurance money will buy you a nice one, in my experience there are only two ways to find 'em. Spend little and get what you pay for, or spend a lot and get one somebody took good care of.
Best of luck and keep us posted!

Manntis,
I'm glad to finally hear your words on what happened, and doubly glad you have minimal injuries.
Just the other day on another forum, I made a post on how the people there (an RPG group) should be more descriptive and elaborate a bit on their posts... You do have the writing talent, and your story grabbed my heart again as I read it.
The young couple remind me, yet again, how wonderful it is to be Canadian. Yes, sure this could have happened anywhere in the world, but it's that brand of kindness that we Canadians are labeled to have and I'm glad it was there for you when you needed it.
I was amazed to hear that you survived Cancer, as not many people have been able to do that. My dad has by some miracle, survived 5 "lethal" types of cancer. He also was in the forces years ago, and I'll tell you, he's always been the biggest person I look up to.
I honestly think that the "looking up to you" that this forum does is deserved. I know I can speak for all of us here when I say, we're all glad you're alive, and don't ever lose the rotary bug. May the spirit of Pam live on in all the cars you pilot.

This is the first I've read of this...
I'm glad you're ok. Good choice on which action to take in the situation.
As everyone else has said "Glad you're not hurt, as the car can be replaced."

thanks guys. So far things are actually looking promising with my insurance co.
Matt is trying to convince me to buy a DeLorean that just came up for sale - he doesn't have to try hard. I've always liked those cars - but I'm ambivolent. I sorta want to buy another FB and build her up into Pam's twin.

I'd say build up another FB, but this time instead of aiming for a stock FB, aim for a nice clean performance car. Mild street port, RB exhaust, MSD ignition system, some tokico shocks and RB springs and sway bars.. maybe a fuel system like DirectFreak did...
Strip the engine and everything out, get a full "whole nine yards" paint job in the colour of your choice.... go all out and make it a wholly unique ManntisMobile. With exactly the amount of power, driving feeling, colour, and look that you want.
DeLoreans are neat cars, but they had alot of problems. I've been a DeLorean follower ever since the first Back To The Future came out, and between my friend Michel and I know pretty much every up-and-down of them. You already know the FB, and they're awesome cars. Take your insurance settlement, get a CHEAP GSL-SE, and rebuild her from the ground up. I tell ya, there's nothing better than the feeling of having personally touched, tweaked, and specified every part and system of a car. If you have the means, go for it.
Godspeed and Good Luck, with whatever you decide. I know I'll be glued to the posts for every step of the progress.

Damn. I've been busy with school, heard you make a comment in another thread and just read this.
Wow.
Words cannot express your loss, yet you did an admirable job in doing so. Your way with prose evokes the emotions so that each of us were in the passenger seat with you - equally glad to walk away.
I'm sorry that I didn't scroll back just one more page in the threads to catch this earlier. Glad you're okay, and hope you find a suitable replacement.

Any update over the last few days?

yup - the insurance co. hired an appraiser to determine damage and value. He said there's $17,000 in damage and the car is worth $22,000. SGI doesn't think any car over a year old is worth that, so they fired him and are demanding I submit receipts for everything to prove that the performance parts exist, that it was in fact new paint, all the stuff that's visible just looking at the car, wrecked or not.

Man the insurance companys are awful.
Insurance in Ontario went up 20-21% for every one.
Sucks ***, and they will do anything to keep from having to pay out.
Any way end of that rant.
Manntis, you know where I stand on your unfortunate accident.
Take care, and go for the FB. It would be a lose to the RX7 Comunity to lose you to the DeLorian crowd (allthough to have one would be very cool ).
Take care

yup, all numbers quoted are Loonies, not Greenbacks.
the more I think about it the more I want another SE. The DeLoreans have rarity on their side but they're pretty mickey-mouse as far as technology goes. Almost a kit-car feel. The SE, on the other hand, is a refined car costing far less than the gullwinged alternative.
