Leaking Gas!!

I have a fuel leak somewhere near the tank. Does anyone know common leakage places on the fb?? I haven't looked for it yet as i just noticed it last night after filling up my tank.

Can tanks be patched with good results?
Is there a replacement tank available? if too much money I WIll just go with a fuel cell..

Took a look under the car and it is leaking from somewhere near the drivers side rear tank strap at the top... bottom of tank looks ok with only rust near the tank strap.. I am going to pull it out but i need to run the fuel out of it first. It may just be the sending unit seal or the filler neck.... like i said i never noticed it until i filled it up for the first time. hope it is structurally sound. I can't afford $950 for a new tank lol.
also still waiting for my Victoria British catalog... Whats the price for a new tank from them?? anyone?? 83 gsl

Right up near the tank of the drivers side you have alot of plastic parts for the fuel system. Something could be brittle and have broke.

Well don't know if "stp fuel system cleaner" cleaned a hole in something or something just broke... will have to wait to pull my tank. but i still have a half a tank of gas.. It's not leaking anymore which makes me think there is no hole. And the sender and fill tube and breather lines are all at the top.. so i imagine its one of those that have gone bad... I will pull it probably tomorow and check..

Whats a good way to clean it up?? and what type of paint should i use to cover up any bare metal parts of it?

Crazy Rays in Jessup, MD has a 1983 GSL with an intact tank. Might wanna check it out if your tank's rusted out.

(Head ALL the way to the back, then ALL the way to the right... They flipped it sideways for me, as I wanted to get the RB header off of it. The rear axle looks good too.)

There should be a drain plug on that tank. Otherwise, if you have another car or a friend's driving you around, run a line from the stock pump out and fill the other car's tank.

Ain't gettin any warmer soon, today's as good a day as any other to check it out.

If it stopped leaking when it got to half full I can assure you the weld in your tank has rusted through, its time for a new tank....

Crawl under your car, and have yourself a smoke, and watch for where the fire goes to

But in all seriousness, I agree with AussieMG. Either that, or there is a rust hole somewhere, and your fuel is now underneath that hole.

Could be something as simple as the filler neck. You won't know for sure until you actually see it, so get to work!

I agree with Kentetsu.... The weld didn't just break overnight for some reason... and it make sense that the filler neck or sending unit seal may have been comprimised when i poured the fuel system cleaner in... anyway pulling the tank cleaning it up and using the por-15 fuel tank restoration sealant.. thanks for the help people

I'll bet you anything that the weld has rusted out along the seam, he lives in MD and they use salt, my 1st US FB did the same thing, leaked until half empty then fine until next fill.

I had a similar problem with a gas leak when I first got my GSL-SE on the road. I wouldn't notice any leaks until I filled the tank right up, that's when it would shower. I ended up draining the tank and tanking it off. Turns out that I had about 12 little pin-holes on the top. I started by patching then individually but everytime I'd put the fuel back in it would leak again. Finally I just patched the entire top of the tank with some kind of fiber glass rezin painted it black and I haven't had a leak since, which is pretty good considering that that was about 2 years ago.

I had a simlaer problem with my car. It would dribble a bit of gas from the tank, at teh rear left somewhare. I fixed it by puting some gum over whare I think the pin hole is. Have not had a leak since... been going strong now for 2 months. Its cheap and shitty but works pritty dam good....
