Its time for a carb rebuild. Given that its over 30 years old, its definitely in need of servicing. While you're in there, just replace both coils as well. I've had them pass a resistance check and still be faulty. They are also over 30 years old and the ignition system would benefit from new coils. If you need any tips on rebuilding the carb shoot me a message. I do a few a year for customers.

Forgot to mention, as far a rebuild kits go, I haven't found one of amazing quality other than the original Mazda kit...which is of course NLA because their kit is sold piece by piece and they'd rather sell you a carb anyways. I've been using the GP Sorensen kit. It can be had at Autozone for like $38 out the door. I have the part number if you'd like it.

mazdaverx713b thank you for the reply and for the offer of tips, i might be shooting you a message shortly. I'm going to smoke test the intake, replace all the vacuum lines and give the carb a rebuild. I will try to update this thread with results once I know whats going on, to hopefully help someone else with a similar problem.

Leave the needles and seats alone. The new ones in the aftermarket kit are junk.

Thanks Jeff I definitley will. I ready Sterlings writeup on rebuilding and it included those words of wisdom as well.

I have a 79. People on the forum recommend 96-555 from AutoZone, but AutoZone recommends 96-462. Can anyone clarify which is the correct kit for my 79?

Nevermind I found the answer on this forum. I need the 96-462 kit for my car. Will update again once I rebuild, hopefully this weekend.
