Exclamation Killed the gearbox at last...

Well it's long awaited death finally came tonight. I had already removed 2 teeth from the drain plug.. it was a bit noisy...

I was driving along, all was well, not a worry at all. Suddenly I heard another tooth break and the consistent noise got louder. For every rev of the engine output there was a clunk from the gearbox. So I'm expecting 3 teeth gone in the box at this stage... however thats a fairly large gap...

Red lights ahead, damn. Had to start from a stop. First gear 'bang bang bang bang BANG' *there goes another tooth*... much louder and more erratic movement of the car. Shifted to 4th gear. Slipped the **** out of the clutch and it went ok. Some idiot in front of me turning across the oncoming traffic and traffic everywhere. Had to stop again... Some god-awful noises came out of the car.

Managed to get into a side-street and then decided to try and get the car home. After using 4th gear and slipping the clutch a hell of a lot, I was able to get back facing the main road.... but by this stage the clutch wasnt working too well. back to first gear. 2 lanes each way, shouldnt be too hard, right? First gear, slowly bringing the clutch out *bang bang bang bang BANG CLUNK rear wheels lock*. Im stuck across the first lane.

Open door, foot outside, push the car back. The end.

Signed up with a roadside-assist company, who offer 8km free towing. Well guess what, it's exactly 8km from where I live to where I broke down. Awesome

So the car is home now, safe, and I picked up a gearbox in pretty good condition soon after. Just waiting for the swap now. I'll be posting pics in the next few days of the insides of my old box.

I was travelling about 60kmh and no more than 4000rpm when all this was happening, wondering would I have broken anything else? What should I check?

The only time the wheels really locked up was in first gear coming out onto the main road, was under 15kmh.

Cheers

Gearbox Kill Photos

Ok guys, prepare for some images of horror

The main shaft input gear and first gear copped all the damage.

- 7 teeth off main shaft input gear
- 2 half teeth off first gear on countershaft
- lots of little metal fragments
- 1 spare speedo drive gear with end twisted off floating around

PHOTOS:

If you're gonna break it, break it RIGHT!...

How the HELL did he accomplish such a feat is what I wanna know... What kinda torque is he running?

EDIT:
Nevermind. Found it in his sig... 130.1hp/96kw@6689 & 102 lb-ft/141Nm@5662

WTF? That's only as much as the US Spec GSL-SE and less than the N/A FC... Both of which use the same style transmission... It couldn't be overpowering...

Yeah that dyno run was a bit dodgy, they screwed up the scales so I'm not exactly sure on it... but ! When I bought the car and drained the box, 1 tooth came out already. And about a month ago a second tooth came out... It just got worse after that.

I'm guessing more could have broken before I bought it but the previous owner drained it.

It was a good kill imo

EDIT:

Thinking about how this could have happened, maybe it wasnt the engine? Perhaps with the clutch pedal to the floor and gears not meshing, the momentom of the car was transferred thru the diff, in reverse direction through the transmission causing all that damage...
