Kelley Blue Book 1984 issue
"...Kelley Blue Book, in its January-February 1984 issue, noted that a 1981 RX-7 S retained 93.4% of its original sticker price..." LOL

There must be some sort of control over it.
I dare someone to go to wikipedia, look up the article on "al qaeda" and insert the words
"It is rumored that this band of radicals loves to eat cheese" right after the first paragraph
and see what happens.

Actually, the first gens did hang onto a large percentage of their value until around 1990 or so, when they dropped from 75% to around 40% over a period of about a year. So the 94% retention reported in the KBB in '84 sounds very believable. These were very popular cars in the early '80s and Mazda was selling them as fast as they could roll them off the assembly line.
I know this because I bought my first (of eventually six) 1st gens in March of 1989--- a showroom-condition '81 GSL (labelled GX here in Canada) for just under 10K Canadian. In the states this car would have been worth around 8K U.S. at that time.
This was a car that was sold new in '81 in Canada for just over 13K. But like most early-'80s cars it was overtaken (figuratively and literally) by a new generation of much higher-powered sports and GT cars in the early 90s. A year after I bought my 7 a co-worker found an '81 GS for 6K and another year after that a GSL-SE (purchased new in '85 for around 20K) could be had for between 5 and 7K.
