I'm convinced they do. I don't have a K&N, but I put a simalar one on my Buick (yes, my past daily driver). Once I put a cone filter on, I immidiately felt an increase in throttle response and power. Really, anything that can increase the airflow over stock has got to add some sort of power, whether it be only 5hp or 20hp.

I would pay the price for one though. Considering they never go bad. You just clean and re-oil when needed. They probably pay for themselves a hundred times over when used for a long time.

a hundred? how often do you change your air filter, and what's one cost, compared to a k & n?

I got an Amsoil filter when I bought my synthetic oil (for my MX-6) put one in my MX-6 and my Tempo. I guess I should get one for the RX-7...I have enough filter oil to supply a small country (accidentally ordered a case of 12 instead of 1 bottle, thinking they were small bottles, 1 application/bottle. Oops.)

Yes it is an exageration. It may only pay for itself once, but I just wanted to get the point across.

I have a friend who is a calibrator for an OEM. He says they ran back to back tests on the car he calibrates, and the K & N showed no measurable difference in power. In his test, the stock pleated square paper air filter element was replaced with a K & N of identical design (a drop-in replacement 'upgrade' part). Despite this result, there are some important things to realize:

1. This was one test on one car -- your results may vary.
2. If you upgrade to a K & N filter that provides more surface area or puts it in a cooler stream of air, you could expect to see some gain.
3. The K & N can be washed and reinstalled -- which may be the greatest benefit of all.
4. Some K & N kits look cool.

I run K & N filters on my Weber carbs. I have no illusion that they make my car faster. I'm in the game for reasons 3 & 4.
