Its alive!
Hello everyone. wonderful forum!
17 yrs ago at the age of 24 I bought my first brand new car. A mazda RX7. I loved that car. It seized up 10 yrs ago with 179,000 miles on it.
Four days ago, a mechanic called to say my car was in his wrecking lot and could I please move it. My 14 yr old son went wild. He wanted it. So, I loaded it on a trailer and brought it home making it clear to him that it would never run again.
6 hours later he has the thing running. Not just running but sounding good! The mechanic that pronounced it dead 10 yrs ago was WAY off!
Problem is, I know very little about all the stuff you guys are talking about here. (remember I was 24 when I bought it). I don't know if it is a GSL a GSL-SE...or WHAT. All I know is it is a 1984 RX7. My owners manual was removed along with all the ***** from the radio while at the wrecking yard. Can anyone tell me anything about my long lost car? Can I find out anything about it from the VIN?
Thanks for any info.

Now that I have gotten someone to talk to me, let me tell yall what my son did and perhaps someone could tell us what he still needs to do.
First he drained the gas tank, and fuel lines. Then filled with fresh gas and B-12 (a whole pint to five gallons gas). He pulled the spark plugs and cleaned them (they were severely fouled). Filled the radiator. Changed the oil. Then he swiped the battery off my suburban and turned the key. After a few pumps to the accelerator it fired up. Cloud of black smoke from the tail pipe followed by white smoke, followed by no smoke. He then bled the brake lines and attempted to bleed the clutch lines but the master cylinder is broken so we are waiting on a new one from parts house. He replaced two vacuum hoses and we are still hunting a vacuum leak (ran out of B-12).
Is there anything he should be sure to do to a car that has set up for almost 10 yrs? This is over my head. I think I have told him to do about all I know to do. Being a housewife does not keep me up on auto repair.
This forum is great! My son has read almost every single post!

Wow,10 years sitting thats amazing typical 12a . and your son is 14 years old. Keep an eye on him might become addicted like the rest of us hehe. Vacuum leak must be from dry rot, do a good visual check over the lines and make sure to replace the fuel filter, spark plug wires, etc..
good luck!

Buy a can of carburator cleaner. Tell your son to spray different areas until he notices a noted ichange in engine rpm. The place he sprayed just before this change largely narrows down the leak hunt.
It's primarily visual and common sense from that point. Happy hunting.
By the way, he should consider replacing all the vacum line hoses with silicon type replacements.

Okay, bought plenty of spray carb cleaner. The hunt begins tomorrow.
We drove the car today for the first time. Oh what fun! If my son was not an addict before today he certainly is one now. I cannot describe to you all, the satisfaction on that boys face, to be driving a car he brought back from the grave.
I think I am beginning to understand better why guys work on cars.
Thanks for everyone's advice, I really appreciate it!

I am having a BLAST!! I peeled out of the drive way today and my son nearly died laughing. Can't imagine what is so funny about seeing your Mom burn rubber . He forgets it was MY car first.
Here is where we are now. My son did the 24 hour ATF soak. Wow did that sucker smoke! Seemed to start much better after that. We took it down a county road and drove it out.
He replaced spark plugs, wires, rotor and rotor cap. That made a huge difference! The car is running smoother but not yet where it should be.
He drained the radiator and refilled.
The car tries to die when we put it in gear. But, if you really punch it, it does okay. Could this be a carburetor problem?
