intercooler location question

i was wondering if it would be efficient at all to run a side munt intercooler like this one(see linky), with hood scoop.. because there is space behind it, so it wont be heat soaked from the motor like a TII.. i like the idea of the fmic, but this scoop combo, coupled with the fact that its functional is just plain badass.

i would consider using an intercooler like this under the scoop.

i would also build ducts for airflow, and maybe even one for an exit to make sure things dont get backed up...

I've seen that site before. That setup is wayyyy Ghetto. Don't cheap out, and just run a front mount. You'll agree later.

i agree completely with alex. all ghettoness aside on that setup... any top mount setup is a candidate for heat soak, regardless of hood scoop. if you want the i/c setup like that then atleast run everything in V-mount. you have to understand the airflow characteristics of the car. alot of air moves thru the front, thru the radiator, oil cooler, FMIC if you had it... or v-mount i/c... you have to help the air flow thru naturally. creating a scoop in a random spot could end up doing absolutely no good. air can go in, but in some spots under the hood it can be like a dead zone where the air may come in from the top of the hood but not really escape anywhere. so what does it do? nothing, just adds to the heat soak.

crap, i think i lost myself yet again. sorry

you can still get a cheap i/c, just add a little more plumbing and put it up front. it's well worth it.

The topmount works fine for a run or two through the gears, and then its done.Even with a forced air scoop,my intake temps hit 175*+ very quickly. The upside is thats its compact and lag is minimal.

A frontmount directly behind the bumper now keeps my intake temps near ambient no matter how hard I push.Lag is slightly increased due to distance, but it can be controlled by running small diameter pipes and a reasonably sized IC core.

An alternative to those would be to mount your IC directly in front of the radiator.Several people have gone that route since there is plenty of room in that area. Its easy to mount up, and then cut holes in the radiator support side walls to feed the pipes to the core.Youll gain the advantage of cool, force fed air into the IC,and it will keep the IC piping short and straight, which will help with lag.

Front mounted is the only serious way to go. Sloping the FMIC back gives space for a larger one with more surface area. I also back dated my oil oiler and radiator to the earlier style as a FMOC is more efficient and keeps the oil feed to the turbo cooler.

Externally it looks stock, but the quarter in 12 seconds with a 12A certainly is not. Who needs a cod piece!

thanks for the great input guys. as ghetto was mentioned earlier, i would do it ghetto, i was just asking baout the location.. i would use a consistant pipe size and ducting for the ic.. But thanks for the input, i will probably go Front mount.
