Intelligent (searched) Fuel Pump Questions
Hey Guys,
I'm got to thinking about fuel pumps, then I got to searching about fuel pumps, which lead to questions about fuel pumps and more searching!
So here I am with whatever questions I have left.
The options, as far as I've seen, are Carter, Mallory and Holley.
The Carter and Holley are supposedly loud, but good fuel pumps. They provide ample pressure, and are supposedly reliable from what I searched, but are somewhat loud. Yaw recommends the Carter, so that carries some weight.
The Mallory is quieter, and mar3 swears by them being better. Aparently they have to be mounted vertically though, and that can be a problem.
So far so good. The deciding factors for me are
1. Price
2. Mounting difficulty and
3. Noise
I might go for a noisier pump if it were one that bolts straight in the stock position, to alleviate the headache of install... So are any of these bolt-ins? Is there any modding that needs to be done for the Carter or Holley to fit?
What's the average going price on these three? Yaw's selling the Carter for about $70, which is a good price. Does anyone have any non-ebay suggestions as to where to get the Mallory or Holleys?
But how loud is "loud"? Like "your bearings are failing soon" loud, or "a pindrop in an empty room" loud?
How/where do you guys mount the Mallory? Have any pics?
And there was some mention of fuel filters that I didn't write down so I can't quote but.... Can you use the stock fuel filters for these or do you need to use another type that doesn't impede flow as much as the stock one? Which ones are good for that? and where can you get them?
Wow... okay, I think I got all my questions out! Please guys, do what you can to answer 'em all
, it'll surely help the fuel newbs such as myself out.
Jon

Not sure about the others...
I put the carter in my car in september and as for loud, I would rate it at "your bearings are failing soon" from the two choices as it is louder than the bearings that failed in my transmission...
There is a quiet kit for it that I have not gotten yet...
It does not mount in the stock location, just near it. It must be mounted in a specific manner as there is a definite top (Signified by an arrow) to it.
Next time I do an update, I will probably try a low pressure inline Fuel Injection pump like the Holley 12-920. It should fit in the stock location..

I still use my old Carter- three years now.

Mario says he has all sorts of cool cars, too, but I think he's makin it all up.

Drilling. Nothing fits where the stock pump went.

Try looking on ebay for one.
...nah man, I'm just ****** with ya! Doncha hate that?
Really, though- unless ebay or anywhere else says it's a new-in-the-box pump, I would never buy a used pump.
But how loud is "loud"? Like "your bearings are failing soon" loud, or "a pindrop in an empty room" loud?
Yeah- your bearings are dropping out in pieces loud, but...*

No

Stock are just fine.

Also, some people I think might be mounting these things to the storage bin pan, which is essentially a gigantic metal speaker cone!
