The thing is it isn't a straight through design. Having the flow reverse direction from the single inlet pipe to the dual outlets creates backpressure which also quiets it down. This is inexpensive to manufacture.

waste of money. seems like everyone on this forum is far too quick to say "OMGRB[insert item here]R0x!!!!1!111!
i'll admit some of RB things are damn amazing, but just because they specialize in Rx's doesnt mean other things wont work.
i've talked to a few muffler specialists who have been in the game for decades and just about any muffler built to handle temps in excess of 900+celcius should work fine. magnaflow included.
straight through flow is still best IMO, but damn loud, im going to try a pre-silencer with maybe a magnaflow or another brand, whatever will work out best.
so far my cherry bomb canadian tire special lasted all of a week with the 13b / holley setup. haha. weird it lasted over a year on the 12a

Magnaflow is THE muffler to use on a rotary. They are pretty much the quietest you can get (besides RB), and they last. They are a little more expensive but worth every penny. Much better flow than almost anything else out there. They are simply amazing.
But more on topic, that looks horrid for a "performance" muffler. Most are just baffled (flowmaster) or packed with fiberglass (cherry bomb or turbo style muffler) or stainless steel wool (magnaflow). There are very few performance mufflers that actually reverse the flow of gasses in the way that one does. I don't much like the sound of RB anyway. I've seen a vid of a stock RX with a full RB exhaust and to me it sounded rice.
So in the words of biffle and autopaul:
Hate the sound
Hate the price even more

HMMMM, makes me like the "Ricer Fart Cannon" on my car a little better. At least it has a baffle, and is full stainless. Considering the fact that it is the only thing doing any silencing at all, it does a rather good job.
Might wind up adding a header later, at which time I may need a little more of a silencer. I think what I have is similar to an RB "presilencer", only bigger. I think a good high flow cat would be just the ticket to help quiet the extra noise a header would generate.........

yes the racing beat exhaust does restrict exhaust flow, but at the same time its not ment to be a drag racing setup. As far as I see it the RB system is a good replacment for the rusted stock setup while maintaining reasonable sound level. As far as the RB system sounding like rice, well you have to hear one in person it has a really unique low sound.
I agree that you will get a little better performance out of a different muffler but it will not be as quite and streetable with the same power increases that the racing beat system offers.
Oh yes and should I also mention that the RB system is built to last unlike some of the other mufflers you find... Some will get you thinking they may hold up to the rotary exhaust but after a few backfires....

yea as always, i will chime in with my magnaflow cheerleading skills. i love them, rb is cool if you want a gutless quiet rotary. yayyyy, I DONT. especially having a turbo setup now, fork that. MAGNAFLOW is where it's at, proven on too many vehicles to list and they easily handle the heat of the rotary. just look at that damn picture!!!!! POWER LOSSSSSS!!! woot!

I agree that the RB exhausts are made to last, they are built very robust, and the thickness of the steel is twice what an ordinary muffler is.
The muffler in the picture has lasted close to 10 years, 3 of those years the car sat idle, which did not help the corrosion. They do corrode through, it is steel after all.
But if you want a less restrictive muffler and can except more decibels (didn't want to say noise) then there are alternatives.

Your positive thats a RB? Does it say "Italy" on it?
Thats either an old design RB,a Pacesetter muffler,or the StreetPort version of the RB muffler is a different animal all together.
I have a 4 year old, slightly louder, 81-82 RB SP muffler on my 84 and its a straight through design,no doubt since I did a bit of reworking to have it hookup to my 3" stainless exhaust.
2.5" inlet that splits into 2 tubes, leading diagonally through the core towards the outlets. You can see all the way through it,no baffles.Still RB quiet, nice and low,but not as quiet as my old 84-85 regular RB muffler...

I GUESS I HAVEN'T HEARD TO MANY ROTARIES ANYWAY, BUT MY BROTHER HAS A 87 BASE 7 WITH A REBUILD MOTOR (S4) AND THE FULL RB EXHAUST-HEADER, PRESILENCER, CATBACK. MAN, I'LL TELLL YOU WHAT, BEING THE PERSON THAT INSTALLED IT, THE BEST SOUND I'VE EVER HEARD. I LOVE MY DOMESTICS, THAT THE ROTARY IS A VERY DISTINCT SOUND, AND I THINK THIS SET UP CAPTURES IT PERFECLY. PERFORMANCE SEEMS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE AS WELL. MY 82 WITH OEM MANIFOLD, NO CATS, CHEAP FREE FLOW MUFFLER, IS VERY LOUD. STILL A ROTARY--BRAAAAAAPPP!!!!!!!!!!
