Inconsistent idle?

I've been having an inconsistent idle for a looong time now. The idle would sometimes be consistent at 780rpm, and sometimes idle at 1000rpm.

I read this page: http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/gslseidle.html and went through the standard idle adjustment several times. However, it was still never consistent.

I took my intake manifolds and throttle body off yesterday to clean, and found that the linkage on the cold-start thing to be a bit dirty, making the last mm's of the throttle plates (before hitting the dashpot) a bit rough to close fully. Could this be a reason for my idle to be so inconsistent?

Since nobody seems to be helping you out, I'll give it a shot. Mine used to do the same thing (gsl-se). Whenever it got good and warm, it would idle at 1000. Went through the whole "fix idle" process as you did with no change.

My throttle plates stick a little as you describe yours, however, I didn't remove the intake at all. I looked closely at the cruise control connection, and it seemed to be just barely tight. For the fun of it, I backed the adjuster off a couple of turns, and put some slack in the cruise cable that I could actually feel. Viola! perfect 800 rpm every time.

I notice also that the throttle return spring at the rear is very weak when the plates are almost closed. I think just for safety sake, I'm going to add a stronger spring. This will pull it past the final little bit that sticks, and will ensure those plates close when I take my foot off the gas.

^^ Thanks! Hmm, I just removed my cruise control as well as having my whole intake tract cleaned up. I'll see how it goes.

Since you've done all that work, and also don't have the cruise attached anymore, I'll throw a shot in the dark out there....

Any chance you're not getting up to operating temperature sometimes, and the ECM runs the faster idle. I had a intermittently bad thermostat on a 91 mx-6 I used to have. Or second guess, intermittent or bad temp sensor?

Third guess, - check that the fast idle cam spring isn't loose such that it sometimes engages part way. You could wait until its cold, then open the hood. If you move the throttle open a little it should click and sitck in the fast idle cam. If it does, so far so good. Then idle the engine until warm and turn it off. It takes two hands, but the idea is to see if the fast idle cam is sticking part way on. If this only happens sometimes, wherever it happens, stop the car and check that cam.

Final guess - you probably did this, but the TPS?

In the first gens only the gsl-se is injected, so the problem may be different from a "normal" FB problem.

Thanks for the suggestions!

BTW, I haven't gotten the car back together yet since the damn LIM-block gasket is so stuck to the block I'll have to see if the fruits of my labor in cleaning the entire intake tract actually did anything... lol.

Also, the little "roller"- looking thing of the fast idle cam was what I mentioned in my first post being dirty. I cleaned that up a bit so it rolls along the cam smoothly now.

Now, back to getting the damn gasket off the block...

I wasn't talking about the movement like that. I mean that the fast idle cam could stick ON because the temp sender says the car it still cold. Sort of like an automatic choke sticking on.

Patience with the gasket. Screw up the surface and you'll really be in trouble. Recently I found a chemical gasket remover at NAPA. Its a little pricey, I think I remember about 12 bucks a can, but this stuff will eat just about anything. I used it to remove marine silicone on my boat, but as I said, it seems to eat just about anything.
