Inconsistent Idle

Inconsistent Idle
Ever since I purchased my car in April it has idled low. On the drive back from the sellers house to my house it killed 9 times. Then we bought a new distributor cap and rotor for it. We took it out and it killed and after a while it was idleing on it's own. But rough. Now It idles ok but still choppy. It's inconsistant though. one second it will idle pretty good and then i'll rev it up to 3000 and let it fall and it idles at like 500 and stutters below and struggles to get back up. Any body know what's happening?

Well, it could be a limited number of things.
1) (Most likely) a vacuum leak
2) Leading ignition is dead
3) Timing is off
4) Idle mixture is off
5) something is wrong with the carb, such as stuck float needle(s).
6) Fuel delivery problem.

I would recommend that you start with the basic tune-up items...
Cap/Rotor, plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, and run a can of Seafoam through the gas tank.
Also, check out your battery connections, both + and ground wires. These cars are notorious for bad grounding. Good luck with it...
