OK, I got the old exhaust off... But, it looks like the old gasket between the exhaust manifold and the engine is stuck on there.

Any ideas how to get it off without ripping it to pieces? I don't want anything to go into the exhaust ports. I was thinking of trying to pry it off from behind with a flat head screwdriver.

The new exhaust is mostly on, thanks to Racing Beat forgetting to send me all the nuts/bolts/block-off plates.

If I were you, I would use either Stainless Steel, or Monel (NiCu) bolts/nuts.

At least RB is being cool about it... They know it's their ****-up, they are express mailing me the parts they forgot. I have enough stuff to bolt it on the car, but I need the block off plates.

I just chopped the hoe off. Used a crappy *** Craftsman electric reciprocating saw, broke right when I almost finished and bent the rest of the metal off. Then I grabbed the muffler and gave it 2 hard *** pulls and took the biatch out. Damn Craftsman ***** crap broke(bought it the night before for 100 bux) so I took it back and got my money back.

If your car is anything like mine was, all I can say is go buy yourself a pair of Mechanix armored gloves and a can of PB Blaster. You'll need them both.

Not hard at all, actually. Two words: Breaker bar.

I did a search and found this thread. I'm trying to install my RB muffler and I can't get the stocker off.

The 14mm nuts connecting the muffler to the rest of the exhaust are rusted stuck. I tried WD40, vice-grips and cheater-wrenches (when you attatch a second wrench to the first one to make the handle longer = more leverage).

I wasn't able to budge it one bit, and it seems the rust has been so great that the 14mm socket (6pt) will no longer fit snugly upon the nut. As a result, the nut is starting to round off. =(

I think I will use my angle grinder 2m to just get rid of the bolt/nut, but I was wondering if there are any other ideas out there? Anyone think the grinder wont' work/ do more dmg than good? Has anybody tried a nut-cracker?

Thanks a lot!
-Chris

use the old machinists trick: hammer and a chisel and break it loose.

wear safety glasses. always. even while walking through town to school.

If you have a compressor, and can no longer use a wrench or socket, get a die grinder and cutoff wheel, then cut the nuts off, but not the ones on the engine. P B Blaster and heat, then wrench or impact those nuts off.

A nut cracker may work, never had to go that route, don't own one, which suprises me.

Wear gloves and safety glasses, good luck.

I tried a nut-cracker down there but it was too big and awkward to get it to fit into the tight spaces. I ended up using the angle grinder on the toughest ones. The rest fell to tons of WD-40, a large breaker bar (non-cheating version of a cheater bar) and two strong men. Good luck.

Use nothing. I am serious. You need more force, and you will hopfully shear the head of the bolt. I did the exhaust on my car, it was 20 years old it was rusted like a ****** *****.
If you use WD40 you make the bolt slipery so it strips easily. If the bolt is very rust, and u strip it, u swith to imperial and hamer on teh ratchet... you reshaped the bolt.

I weigh about 140lbs, so I am not that buff if you know what I mean, so I reversed the order and used my legs to undo the bolts. The bigest problem is the metal brakets for the mufler. Those I had to saw one off with a hack saw blade.

Good Luck, Ted.
