Ignitors and distributor?
I was looking at picking up the ignitors off of an 88. The guy wants me to come remove them from the car myself.
Are they inside the distributor? Or are they mounted near it? I was looking at doing the DLDFIS swap per Jeff20b's site. Do I need the factory wiring (should I cut it or not)? Is their a possibility that they are not the j109 ignitors coming from an NA 88?
Thanks.

The 88 doesn't have a distributor. The ignitor is in the module behind the coil. Un-screw the coil back and pull it out.
If you're going to go that route, why not just do a 2nd gen ignition coil swap? I did a FAQ on it in the main "how to" sticky.
If you need more info, PM me.

Jeff - Did you do that HEI thing? I knew dankus did it but I had no idea you tried it. I did the FC leading coil change but had thought about trying the HEI igniters. I re-used the J109s and I'm getting worried about needing some replacements. If that's the case, I might as well ditch the stock igniters altogether. But I never saw a schematic or a clear description of how to wire it up.

Yep. It works great. There is no schematic as far as I know. I was able to figure out how they work, and wired them up based on that. There's like a W pin that is the same as either the S or G on the back of a J-109. I hooked them up both ways and found the correct polarity while 'bench testing' or whatever you want to call it, with a distributor and a speaker, before installing in the truck.
The setup has three ignitors and three FB (stock or aftermarket) coils. A relay feeds everything with a direct line from the battery (you can probably see the relay with the connectors facing up at the upper right corner of the aluminum plate). The two coils seen in the pic are one for trailing, and one for leading. The other leading is on the inner fender. I was dealing with a lack of space, so that's why I seperated the leading coils (I also didn't want to lengthen the tach signal wire and stuff). You can actually see the backside of the headlight at the upper left of the picture. The ignitors stay cool because they get a nice shot of incoming air.
