Ignition questions

We resurrected a 1985 RX7 GSL witha 12A motor that had been sitting around a while. THe more we drive it the better it runs, but I have two questions.
What is the correct firing order? My Haynes manual show it as L2, T2, L1, T1 but the markings on the dist. cap are L2, T2, T1, L1..

Also, what exactly do the igniters do and how will it act if I have a bad one?

Thanks for any info.

Just wire it up one for one from the cap. L1=leading (lower) T1=Trailing (top). Easy way to remember the wiring diagram. Btw, that description is for the front rotor if you haven't already figured that out. 1=front, 2=rear.

Oh, And the ignitors send the signal to tell the coil when to fire. If you have a bad one it will either not fire on leading or not fire on the trailing. You can get away with it running on the leading only, But the trailing only will give you bad performance if you can even get it started.

Connect 1 plug wire from/to each of the following.
L1 terminal on the distributor to the lower front plug.
L2 terminal on the distributor to the lower rear plug.
T1 terminal on the distributor to the upper front plug.
T2 terminal on the distributor to the upper rear plug.

Connect 1 coil wire from...
L terminal on the distributor to rear coil.
T terminal on the distributor to front coil.

Front coil should have a Black/white wire to + terminal. A Yellow/blue wire to - terminal.
Rear coil should have a Black/white wire to + terminal. A Yellow/green wire to - terminal.

As far as the firing order, Leading fires 20-deg before Trailing, and the two rotors fire 180-Deg apart, so the correct order is L1 - T1 - L2 - T2 - repeat... Or L2 - T2 - L1 - T1, depending on where you decide to "start."

L1 in a stock setup fires at 0-deg TDC (on 80's at least).

The "order" on the cap is funny because there are two coils involved, firing at different times.

Early rotaries actually had two separate dizzies. Mazda got creative & came up with a dizzy design with a single cap and rotor, which is basically two caps stacked on top each other.
