Idiot Lights...How Do They Work?
Ok, I just put the engine in my 83 RX-7, hooked up all the wires and I think I got it right...However, when I hooked up the battery and turned the car "on" just to check some stuff, not all the idiot lights came on like in my 84, and both my 85s before you start it. Did I do something wrong or is this normal for an 83? The seat belt, brake, and add coolant lights came on (dont have anything in the radiator yet ), but not all of them cam on like I am used to. Any ideas?

Ive explained how this works like 10 times, and Ill be dammed if I cant find it.
Ok on the left side of the car, up towards the firewall (in front of the strut) Theres a relay, its a silver box that says choke and check relay. It suppose to come on when it sees ignition and shut off we the alt starts charging. I beleive from memory (its early for me, so bear with me) Its a small white/blk at the alt... Some reason that relay isnt getting power up at ignition

Is that the same on the 84-85? Cause I just ran out to the driveway and looked and I found a few silver boxes, (all oxidized and I cant read them anyway) but none of them said choke or check relay, or any combination of the above. And there is only one wire coming off of my alternator, and its white with a red stripe. Ummm? Am I close to understanding you? Pictures anyone?

Should be the same basic thing for all 1st gens, well dunno for the -SE but anyways...
The relay that you are looking for maybe goldish colored, I know mine is... It has 2 molex connectors going into it, one is a 2 wire connector the other is a 4 wire connector, thats the relay...
Now at the alt at the very rear there is a 2 wire molex plug thats the plug im referring to. One wire is 12V ign and the other goes to that relay...
I used to have a shitload of problems with it either working or not working, eventually I cleaned the points inside the relay it would work for a month or so and then was doing it again, so I removed it and disassembled it completely, soldered the points on the relay filed them down to the right tolerance. Put it back together and never had a problem since. I can snap you a picture of it, but I imagine mine is in a totally different place thatn yours is now. I moved all that stuff to make room for the 2nd gen coil packs
