ideas for modding 12a air box

I have an extra blue air box and want some ideas on how to improve it. I know a lot of you mod them, got any pics of them? I'd like to keep it clean looking, so drilling a million holes in it is out of the question. TIA

This was my setup when I had the modded four barrel. I got rid of the stock snorkel, opened up the hole and replaced it with large pvc pipe moulded to suit. The pipe ran down in front of the radiator and had a bellmouthed intake on the end.

I also removed all the **** inside the box and tig welded the holes. Don't how much difference any of this made but at least I knew it was working as well as it could. Afterall, 150rwhp isn't bad from a 12A streetport with modded Nikki carby.

similar to what I had in mind, but in my design you'd toss the blue round airpan entirely and have a cone filter up front

I was gonna make a custom CAI for my car as well. Like you Manntis, I planned on eliminating the blue thing completely (after I remove emissions stuff to make it easier), then I was gonna make a box (small shoe box size I guess), then duct fresh air from up front to it with univeral K&N cone filter on the end. I planned on taking some of that bendable aluminum hose stuff you can get for heater duct, then after I have the right shape, take it to an exhaust shop and then have a solid pipe bent to fit. Then, I can cut it (for installation ease) and use those rubber couplings with the screw clamps to put it back together...If that makes sense.

the inspiration for this piece was the lid thing that rx7.com sells. this would look pretty reasonable if it was actually round, and if it was polished.

Revhead has the right idea, simple but effective! And cheap too! Sorry Joel you lose..... j/k but your setup still sucks hot air into the carb so you are losing..................hp that is! I have done and tested what Revhead did and it works nicely, but I took it to the next level. I used insulated A/C duct and encased the blue box with insulating blanket. Now I have true CAI even at a stoplight! Also mine uses 2 90* 4" sewer pipe elbows thru the radiator support to get a true ram air effect too! Much lighter than PVC BTW. Oh and I didnt cut off the horn completely, I just cut it back to the shaft for the flapper. Fits a 4" duct perfect.

revheads setup is what all the it/pro7 racers around here use. they used to cut holes around the outside, but the snorkle works better.

manntis: if you can find the june 1981 issue of car and driver, they have a picture of the racing beat gtu cars airbox. they had dual 4-5" tubes going into it

has anyone ever done a true cold air intake with a cone filter down by the rad on a 12a before? I've been thinking about it more and would really just like to get rid of the air box all together. Does any company make some sort of adapter that goes in place of the air box?

on the topic of air boxes..

my charcol canister is starting to rattle when i shake it, and i been told by the guys down at selectmaz to watch it because it can actualy open up and charcol can get in ur engine..
so i went about taking it off and i drilled out all the spot welds on it, but it still wont come off? is there anything else holding it on?
