I own a ’84 GS, ’85 GSL SE and a ’05 STi. The STi is used for weekends/trackdays (road course), the ’85 SE is the project, soon to be autocross and daily driver. And the ’84 GS is the daily driver, but will be sold in the next few months.

I don’t think that the SE would need TOO much work to keep up with or beat a WRX. Are we talking about straight line acceleration (1/4 mile), autocross, or road course?

If I was going to add a major power adder to my SE, it would be the TII swap. I think that would be plenty.

The FB RX-7 is a fantastic car. Don’t let other peoples narrow minded opinions affect you. I do have many friends that own WRX’s, STi’s and EVO’s. I have let some of these close friends drive my RX-7’s, each one of them really enjoyed the feel and balance that the car had to offer. A couple of them are now currently looking to add a second vehicle to their garage (FB or FC).

Well hey, don't hold back on my account, just go ahead and give us your Expert Fn Opinion! Drive one before speaking out of your ***.

Yes, there are not many things that look as clumsy as a STI on an autocross course. They roll, plow, and look like a hippo performing a ballet. But like I said, drive one for a bit before spouting off to someone with hands-on experience.

whoa whoa whoa guys, calm down. I just wanna smash egos of alot of WRX owners in my area. I correct myself for saying I hate them, but instead alot of their owners. now...peace! so whats the expected $$$ for me to spend on the whole thing ( engine, exhaust, knick knacks) , power only! w/o suspension mod included ( i will do suspension, i just want to know the power cost )

And any suggestion of "Free" horsepowers?

LOL. I know what you mean. And the WRX/STI is a very worthy goal to shoot for (straightline speed/hp wise).

A buddy raced an sti on my road in a 2004 Eclipse GT.
It took four runs (They were racing to pass) but he beat it. His car is bone stock pushing 210hp I think, on a curvy *** road, starting to rain.

Racing is not all the car, but the driver as well.
Pick a good, treacherous road that will really show the skill, and see who is the better drivers.

Warning, do not try this at home. Street racing is illegal and sliding 80mph into trees can be slightly dangerous

I'll have to agree it's all in the driver.

My brother has a miata, and on the downhill he can keep up with a modded Evo.

Uphill however is another story. But we all know it's about downhill. The extra weight really catches up to you on the downhill. Autocross is a toatally different story!

Well, I said that the car deserves respect. Now you read your last line and tell me what you meant by it.

I was saying that talking about a car and how much respect it warants is right up there with talking about "street creed" and living your life a quarter mile at a time.

Would you care to back step and change the ******* subject again?

As far as beating an WRX, well, it's a safe bet they have MUCH more money invested in their car.
I remember when those idiots with the "Mine's prettier" attitudes could be silenced rather quickly with a simple "Mine's paid for" reply.
Sometimes it's all about who REALLY owns the car, the driver, his parents, or his banker..............

ehh, if you want to go faster search the forum, then just spend money.

On the cheap, put a v8 in there.

On the pricey side, do a T2 swap or a bridge port rebuild.

That's all there is to it.

BTW, the GSL-SE did .88g's on the skid pad, according to Motor Trend in a 4 car comparison of the RX-7, Nissan 300ZX, Mitsubishi Starion ES and Toyota Supra. It was the best of the 4, second highest was the Mitsubishi Starion ES at .83g's. For comparison sake, the Porsche 928 in 79 did .76g's while the 79 RX-7 did .78g's according to a test by Road & Track.

Do u have that article still? If so can u scan i would REALLY like to see that!

STi's typically put down 235-250 whp and 240-255 wtq depending on the dyno completely stock.

With your popular AWD drivetrain loss of 20%, it will put the STi at 300-315 hp/tq on the motor.

I was not OVERLY impressed with my '05 STi, until my first track event (road course). After that experience, I was smiling ear to ear.

They are pretty quick four door sedans.

an STI is not a car to messed with especially when modded i went head to head with one in the 1/8 mile in my fairly modded galant vr4 on race gas and 23 lb, now it would take a lot for the FB to play with it those things have LSD everywhere they launch like a **** and the tires even squeal while my VR4 was getting sideways!

That is the same damned thing my dad said after he got his STi. It's not much quicker than his WRX that he had before the STi, but it is much torquier and handles so much better; even compared to his old WRX with suspension mods.

This was stolen from the faq's page. If you scroll down to 1984 and read the information on the model year, it talks about the Motor Trend article. I would like to know the month that issue was released?

Notice the part where I mentioned with "not much work" to the Rx7 will it be able to go DOWN a mountain BTW, handling describes how able you are to drive the car. The word speaks for itself (handle).

Did you also not see the part where weight, and CoG was mentioned was mentioned? The GDB chassis is undoubtedly much more top heavy than a 1st Gen Rx7.

What I might think would be much harder to beat is and Sti Spec C, which was not sold here in the US. Damn near impossible to build your own one too

The RX-7 was a great cheap sports car when it was designed in 1978. To cut costs for the mass market the steering, brakes and backend were accountants' choices. Unfortunately modifying options are limited, even with good drivers handling is suspect. Look what happened on curves to two well known Gen 1s driven by expert forum members. the photographs at least show the body strength of a Gen 1 when you roll them.

The STi has 25 years of modern development and will outhandle a RX-7 everytime. My experience is its 20% quicker on rural roads, and 50% quicker on dirt roads. 25 years go the RX-7 was slower than the 323 in rally competition and now times are substantially quicker.

A Gen 1 with a well modified 13BT can beat a stock STi over a straight quarter mile. If you are talking about dragging off at the lights, yes it can be done with a hybred FB/FC but what's the point, who are you impressing? No one with real knowledge.

I really enjoy my stock 85 Jspec12AT, 13 second quarters, its a goodlooking classic. Life is far too much fun to waste time outdragging a STi especially with a driver requiring extensive brain modification to match his car's performance.

I found that on www.iluvmyrx7.com. The guy there has a few different magazine articles that were scanned and posted on his site. Go check them out for yourself.

Better yet, here is the exact page with the articles on it. http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/1stgen/arti...n_articles.htm
