I want to beat WRXs!

I hate em, i hate all the arrogant WRX and their owners in my area! i want to beat them I have a 85 GSL-SE, right now im working on converting to a FC oil cooler. I want to go turbo one day, whats the best bang for my bucks. A TII Swap? I've read all the related thread to a TII swap, what else can I do to make it faster other than exhaust system, removal of unessesary stuff like PS and AC, ECU tuning...what else is there? what can i do to get 400 hp...I never really wanted power in the first place but i can't put up with people talking trash about my car anymore , Im sorry if I sound like a Noob, but like most of you, im power hungry too.

You dont need 400 HP to beat a stock WRX just a good bridgeport and a diet whould give you a superior power to weight, but in the wet forget it AWD is a lot more grip.

You don't even need that to beat a stock wrx. The problem isn't WRX's it's STi's. A stock wrx runs high 14's with the average driver. Also there has been tunig issues with WRX's the factory computer drops boost after 5k. so they go from 12 down to 5 by redline. People haven't been able to combat this even with boost controlers and chips. They need the cpu reflashed or stand alone to get it done. Hense if you're a freeway racer those cars aren't much of a match for a street port and a weber and exaust. From personal experiance I've beaten 3 wrx's on the free way 45-100. but the only mods they had were intake exhauset and boost controler. all 3 of them same mods. lol. But STI's are a different story. A 13.1 car stock. Just a few mods gets those cars pushing 12's. Realisticly all you'll need is 200 to the wheels to keep up. I'd recomend a turbo blow through if those are your goals. a street port with a blow through should give you what you need to put those guys away. but from the light you need to be able to hook up that power and try and match their awesome launch. since on the street w/o gumballs you're not ever going to match a sti or wrx out of the hole you'll need the power for the pass and turbo set up putting 250 or more hould be enough to kill the avarage tuner. And a good bridge with 250 to the wheels would be perfect chice in my oppinion. Nothing better than telling some one they just got killed by a 1.3l n/a car!

Beat the WRX in the rain up on canyon roads. I'll guarantee you will make the WRX driver feel as low as you possibly can (STi or not)

An STi will rape an FB on "canyon roads," pal. Wet or not. The STi is not a joke when it comes to the track; straight or twisty.

The STi pulls, what, .90+gs on the skidpad? 68.5mph in the slalom?

The GSL-SE pulls, IIRC, .85? Given the fact that the FB make 130hp, and the STi makes 300hp; it makes sense that if both cars handle the same, the one with the most power will have the ability to pull out of the corners faster, pull on the straights faster, and approach future corners faster. Another thing you must consider is braking.

Stock FB brakes aren't that great, they are okay with good pads. The STi's braking is ******* incredible. 60-0 in 110 feet. Stock for the FB was, what, 140+ feet? That plays a huge role in "taking it to the twisties."

Now, if you put the money into an FB to make it beat an STi in the twisties, awesome for you. But, I'd rather not spend that much money just to beat a stock car with a warranty...

i'm pretty sure the fb was in the 130 range. and the fact is that you can easily out brake your tires. look at teh sti's stock tires. put those on an fb and your close to an sti in brakeing

An FD could hold its own (probably), but you're going to have to dump some money to bring your FB up to snuff for beating a STI under any conditions (you might take him in autocross though). And don't hate the car man, just the driver. Accuracy is more important than the number of rounds fired.

The WRX STi is currently one of the best valued cars currently made IMO. Extremely quick from the factory and can handle like its on rails. BUt if you think about it, the RX-7 was the same story when it came out. Excellent handling with fairly good speed for that time.

BTW, the GSL-SE did .88g's on the skid pad, according to Motor Trend in a 4 car comparison of the RX-7, Nissan 300ZX, Mitsubishi Starion ES and Toyota Supra. It was the best of the 4, second highest was the Mitsubishi Starion ES at .83g's. For comparison sake, the Porsche 928 in 79 did .76g's while the 79 RX-7 did .78g's according to a test by Road & Track.

I'd give that one to tire technology then vs. 84-85 tire tech.

there weren't much changes in the suspension only big difference was the change in rear swaybar, and the change in tires. In 79 it came with 175/70-13's and in 84-85 the se had 185/60-14's i belive... mt goal is to get the rx over 1g, but that's hardly subject of conversation in this slowly changing to rice world...

I totally agree, the STi is 20 years on from the FB. The stock WRX is sold as a safe shopping car so why waste money trying to beat one just because it carries a few rice decals. No matter what money you throw at an FB it will always loose out on the road against a prepared STi. An amateur level rally version is fantastic, the factory version is out of the this world but what do you expect for a million dollar car.

My brother bought an STI just a few months ago. My car with race rubber and decent suspension can easily pull over 1g lateral, but I'm fairly certain it can't dive into a corner like the STI. Then again, I haven't driven my RX-7 fast around a turn with fresh race rubber in over a year. I might be able to outbrake him through a few laps, but my brakes would begin to heat soak and fade much faster than the STI's. In just about any acceleration contest, I'd be slaughtered.

To get back on the original subject: Don't waste time and money on bolt-ons, do the TII swap, and if you want to beat everyone on the road that might talk crap about your ride... make sure the pile of cash you're financing the project with stays high and wide.

My statement was very general, but it doesn't take much for a 1st Gen Rx7 to get down a mountain quicker than an STi will/can.

Did you overlook weight, center of gravity, etc.... or just took those factors lightly?

Of course this depends on what your local canyon road is like, but if a car can enter, and go through the turn carrying more momentum, then it will not NEED to brake as much/hard.

It honestly does not take very much money to put into your 1st Gen Rx7. What takes the money from you is the time and effort placed into learning to drive your car.

I own a 02 WRX that is near 300 hp, and making 16psi at 7200 RPM. The RX7 is gonna be my auto-x car, and the WRX is definitely the straight line car.

My buddy has an '05 STI, which he bought after selling his '02 WRX. I have driven it (and I do mean driven it) on several occassions, and it is astounding. Don't hate the car just because there are so many pencil necked dweebs out there acting like the king 'O the world, while you cannot have one. The car deserves respect. If you owned one, I bet you'd love it!

And the Evo outhandles the STi. I love Sti's,but tires and suspinsion will easily get your a higher rating on the skid pad. Car & Driver simply threw some nicer tires on the EVO,almost R compound,and it pulled over a 1g.

go to mazspeed.com check the write up on turbo'ing your gsl-se.

Or go all out and piece together a T2 ecu and get yourself a t2 motor.

an FB with a t2 motor does 13's easily.

But afew guys on mazspeed pulled those numbers buy adding a turbo to their 6-port.

Funny though STI's owners are the same in canada, however around here they get pumped quiet often. There are lots of 12 second cars (civic's/talons) in my area on the street.

In 20 years the WRX might be what the rx-7 is now. Kind of an obscure anachronism with a cult following, that everyone once owned and liked.

I have never seen anything more clumsy looking than an sti or evo at an auto cross.

I've been watching them lately and really can't believe the amount of body roll they produce on a solo2 course.

Maybe this has something to do with the ham fisted ********* that buy them and think they are race car drivers al of a sudden......dunno........


But I have found them seriously unimpresive to watch. I watched a dodge dakota run the cours 10 times smother than those pos, front end plowing, body rolling sti's and evo's.............


Oh and anyone who talks about a car "demanding respect" is a god damed F&F ricer.

Who had the better time? Smoothness can carry more speed, but the way those cars handle you can toss them into turns and they still hang on. Bodyroll or not, I'd wager those STIs and Evo8s rounded the cones in decent time.

If i go with TII, what are some engine modification options i can go with? From what i've read, it seems that a street port will be best for Turbo. Anything else? Is a S4 or S5 stock turbo good?

I've decided to go with a TII swap, I wanna have all the money somewhat calculated...
