Hey Alex, stuck bolts are a right of passage, and they teach you lots about what mechanical work is really about. Be patient, get the right tool and the right angle of attack so that you have leverage working for you. And, USE LOTS OF PB BLASTER! I've removed three of those heat shields now, two without too much trouble but the third had rusted bolts and about half of them snapped off. Good to hear you're getting greasy!

I dont know if I said it before or not, two jacks are really really helpful. That way you can adjust the angle of the trans of the reinstal. I have a tranny jack, but I dought you wanna dish out the 200$ for basically a 1 or 2 time use thing.

Drifter, could you translate? I'm kind of curious what this means.

FTW = ?
smoke wrench it = ?
whose JK and what doesn't he do?

Thanks
Ray

Oh yea, I agree, using jacks makes the job go a lot easier, especially working it up through the shifter hole and stabbing it in at the end.

We always called a torch the gas wrench. If you're smoking, something is usually on fire.

Hip, don't give up. We all have had our rusted and broken bolt and knuckle baptism. Once you are done with the tranny, you will become an official member of the Church of the Rotary Gods.

if the bolt heads or nuts are completly stripped out, the nyou can do one of 2 things.

Use vice grips and pray, or pick up a set of EASY-OUTS. I dont know how many times these have proved 498767536767x there worth.

omg i tote smell yall. few hours ago i attacked 4 24yrold untouched bolts of my exhaust heat shield which i had success with 2. 1 closest to the firewall/carb side has barely any room to work.. i dont have tools i think i need a socket wrench with a 90 degree twist action handle. and the other one that i have to crawl underneath the car. i pushed with all my might and squeezed all my wd-40 with no success =[.

omg = oh my goodness =]
tote = totally

what i just said sounded weird..

Here's another lesson for me...

OK,

If you want to line up single file down the hallway we can commence with an orderly *** kicking.

I should've checked this... The shop I took the car to told me that the hydraulics system was ok but when I removed the slave cylinder from the bellhousing i noticed that there was A LOT of fluid under the boot. After searching through the forum I've noticed that this could mean that the slave cylinder has went out? I ordered a new one (along with a new clutch hose) at work today but I'm not sure of something.

- When the cylinder is removed from the bellhousing is the pressure in the system no longer there? After I took it out I pumped the pedal a few times just to see if the "movey thingy" (I'm not sure of it's exact name but I'm pretty sure it's the piece that actuates the clutch) still moved. It did (althought very, very slightly) and after doing this I noticed that my fluid resevoir practically depleted itself. I then proceeded to pull back the rubber boot and shot hydraulic fluid all over myself. When you bleed a new cylinder and hose do you do it with the slave cylinder removed or installed in the bellhousing? I find it hard to believe that anyone can reach their hand in their and crack open the bleeder valve but if there's no pressure when the cylinder is removed from the bellhousing I guess I thought wrong. Anyways, I'm looking for some clarity here. I'm sure you will all be able to help out as you have in the past and I'm sorry about not posting as often as I had when I first got on here, I've been working and trying to fiddle around the car so I haven't had as much time. Well, I look foward to hearing from all of you!

Regards,
Alexander Hipple

Bleed the clutch system, intact, on the car. Brake fluid eats paint, be careful there.

You will kick yourself in the *** enough if the shop was wrong and the only problem was the slave cylinder, we won't need to line up. That right there is the first reason why I do my own work. I refuse to pay people to be wrong, I do a better job at that myself somedays.

Thanks Trochoid, I should be looking for a steady stream of fluid, correct?

Another question, I don't know if this tube came loose while I was pulling the slave cylinder out from under the garble of wires and vaccum hoses (this all leads to another question) but there is a hose that isn't connected to anything now. I'll attach a pic of it and where it came from. Hopefully somebody can tell me if I just pulled the special self-destruct hose out of it's place so I don't start the car and blow up.

My second question here is... how simplified can I get this engine bay? I understand you can pull all of the emissions crap off without a problem but is there anything else? Wiring? Miscellaneous what-nots that are not needed? Any help here would be appreciated but I'll run a search too.

Thanks again,
Alexander Hipple

It's the hose that my finger is pointing to.

Wow either you got some real white skin or the sun was out today in full force. I ran out to the car and on mine all the hoses and everything look different

Thanks a ton for the quick look FC. I really appreciate it, man. What year is your car again?

Yeah, I'm pretty white but I think that's mostly the flash from the camera. That's in the top left corner of the engine bay if that helps out any. Hmmm, it's an 84' GSL so if anybody who has one (with the 12A still in it) could look for me and perhaps take a pic of what it runs to I would appreciate that.

Well mine is a 85 base, but all my emissions have been romoved. I looked for 2 hoses that a held together by a clip like posted in your pic, and going to where they disapear in the pic. And all I saw was AC lines and pluged vac lines going to nowhere.

Hmmm... Do you think it could have something to do with the emissions system then? How long did it take you to remove all of that hogwash? I'm thinking about doing it this weekend.

Well when I got my car the emissions were removed already. When I removed my emissions on my FC though it was pretty easy except for findon a way to have the 5th and 6th ports open when they should. H/o ill get you a link for the removal.

Alex, if you remove the "rat's nest" you will be smelling gas and exhaust fumes like you worked in the pits at NASCAR everytime you drive your car. Imagine what your girlfriend will think about this. Also you will significantly reduce the value of the car because reselling without emissions equipment will be limited to those few folks who live in areas without emissions and you will have changed the car from stock in a big way. Cars in original condition generally resell for more than ones that have been "mollested".

On the hydraulics, I hope you have learned the importance of properly diagosing your problem before you start repairs, especially major ones like a clutch replacement. As I recall some of the first advice you got about your clutch problems was to make sure the hydraulics were fully functioning and I specifically remember asking you to have a friend push on the clutch pedal while you observed the lever going into the clutch housing, to make sure you were getting good action there. Sounds like you weren't.

And if this is kicking you down the hall, then I need to be standing next to you, because I did the same damn thing on my first clutch job, fluid in the slave boot and all, so we can line up and get kicked down there together.

Finally, working around that clutch slave cylinder is a bitch. It helps to remove a few of the vacuum tubing and emissions gadgets right in the area of the slave, but mark them or better take a good photo first, so you will know how to put it back together. Then, when you don't do this, ask us and we'll post a photo. You can get to the driver's side mounting bolt from directly above using a socket wrench with a long extension. Attack the passenger side bolt from the passenger side with a short box wrench, after you have removed the air filter, of course.

Did you get a stainless steel clutch line? I recall this was on your wish list.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Ray

Ray, I disagree man. My rat's are gone, and my car smells just fine... You must have missed something when you did yours, or maybe I just got lucky?

Is there any reason not to bleed the clutch system before you actually mount the slave cylinder to the tranny? I think you could just let it hang below the master cylinder for the bleeding process, then mount it up when that's done. This should improve accessibility...

Oh, and here are a couple of pix for you. It's nowhere near complete yet, but my engine bay is much simpler than stock. Still a few more items to remove, and plenty of cleaning up as far as wiring etc. I have three sons, so I'm not exactly worried about resale value. In the mean time its all about simplification, "if it don't need to be there, then it ain't gonna be there"...

Kentetsu, I haven't removed a rat's nest from my 7's so I'm not sure of the exact results of doing this. However I have replaced my cats with a bonez presilencer for a nice power gain and better gas mileage, but along with that comes exhaust smells at stop lights and a brown spot on the rear over the exhaust tips from the smog. Maybe I need to do some timing and carb adjustments but I still think that someone who is going to bypass the emissions equipment might want to consider the possibility that exhaust emissions may become a problem, especially at the inspection station. I plan on living without a cat on my white 84 GSL, but when I streatport the tan 84 GSL I'll be looking for a nice free flow cat set up.

I'm sure that bleeding the master cylinder before installing it is a good idea, as Kentetsu, suggests, when I replaced my clutch a few weeks ago I unbolted it and let it hang there while the tranny was out, then just bolted it back down. Saves a lot of work.

I like your set up Kentetsu, do you have a cat (I suspect not) and how do you think one would work with a nice cleaned up engine like that? Might be good for the tan 84 GSL.

You catching all this Alex?

Thanks Ray. I have a full RB exhaust, so no cats. Whenever you have a 7 that fills the cabin with exhaust fumes at a light, you should take a look at the seal around the tail light.

My fumes are pretty strong when I first start her up, but I have a Sterling carb so she's pretty rich right now anyway. Once she's warmed up and I'm just driving around I never even catch of whiff of it.

RE: ray green

Yeah, I feel bad about not triple checking it before working on the car but I'm thinking it would be good to do the clutch anyways. That way I know that I have a foolproof clutch system (new hydraulics and pressure plate, disc and bearings) so I can further diagnose the problem if it continues. I thought when I started this that it could not have been the hydraulic system because I had a friend push the pedal down and it looked like the "actuator?" moved, maybe not enough though? Then when I took it into a shop to have them diagnose the problem for me I told them I thought it might be the hydraulics but they said that the system was working fine. However, as soon as it was removed from the bellhousing and I depressed the clutch pedal the slave cylinder sucked my resevoir close to dry and my pedal stuck to the floor. Here's a question though, how the heck do you get the slave cylinder and clutch hose disconnected from the rest of the system?!? I tried to wrench it apart where the hose connected to the slave but it would not budge! I'm thinking there might be fluid in there still that I'll have to drain out. I have an aquaintance over here who works across the street from me and has the emissions system removed from his GSL. He likes it, he said that it makes the car run better and I've never noticed any nasty odors coming from it. I'm not really worried about resale value. My grandiose dream for this car is to do a TurboII swap and replace most of the FB parts (transmission, rear end, brakes,) that aren't "up to date" with their FC counterparts in hopes of squeezing some performance out of there while keeping the full stock look. Plus, aren't FCs a five lug pattern? That would be nice...

Well, I thank you again for checking up on me and I'm pretty stoked that I'm so quick to receive a reply when a question is posted. I couldn't tell you how much I appreciate it!

Regards,
Alexander Hipple

P.S. - I didn't get a stainless steel line. Unfortunately the shop that I work at doesn't deal in aftermarket parts and I wanted to get this baby up and driving A.S.A.P. I will in the future though.

Hey Kentetsu, in the fourth picture to the right that you posted (of your engine bay) what is that thing with the two hoses running from it in the top left corner of the bay? I believe that's what I'm looking for. I need to know where the smaller hose runs to because I believe that I disconnected it last night. Also, will you post some pictures of your exhaust? Thanks a ton!

Alexander Hipple

That's the carbon cannister Alex. I don't recall offhand how the lines are routed, but if nobody comes along with the info before I get out of work I'll post some more shots tomorrow...
