I need help with MSD install

Before you flame me, yes I have searched.

I really need some help before I proceed. I was installing my MSD 6al in my 1980. It is not quite the same as S2-S3's.
Here is my question:
If I understand the install correctly, the MSD will replace the ignitor (leading only). It will receive the firing signal from the distributor. And then the msd sends the signal to the coil. Correct?

On a 80 the ignitors are mounted externally from the dizzy. The two ignitors are mounted on the back of a metal box. In the wiring diagram, this box is labeled as the "ignitor". Which is both the leading and trailing. But, in reality the actual ignitors are mounted on the back. These are the J105 ignitors. The "ignitor box" has other wires running from it also. One to ground of course, and one to the altitude switch and some other switches. Also, one to the "No. 2 water temp switch".

From the dizzy to the ignitor box are four wires. No color is designated on the diagram. In the actual dizzy are four wires. 2 sets of one green and one red. One set to the leading, and one to the trailing pickups.

From the leading ignitor there are a Green/yellow stripe wire, and a Black/white stripe wire. This corresponds to the wires to the coil.

From the leading coil there are two wires, one to the ignitor box which is Yellow/green stripe, and one Black/white stripe, which I assume is the power lead. It looks to go to the ignition switch.

So, my thought is: I cut the leading wires in the dizzy, splice to the green and purple msd wires, and run to the msd. Green to red, and purple to green. Does this sound correct.

I am not going to cut those dizzy wires until I am certain, that is what I need to do.

Thanks.

there are several ways to install your msd.. call me.. too much typing.. 818-693-1031

quick msd wiring for refrence if anybody is interested

orange wire.... coil + only
black wire...... coil - only
white wire ...... ignitor - only
small red wire.... switched 12 volt, or simply splice the + wire to the ignitor or use the old + wire that went to the + side of the coil that your no longer using

thick black wire ....- chassis ground.. a good one!
thick red wire......... + battery

I am about to get an MSD with a couple BlasterCoils. Ignition is actually the part I know the least about, yet I read how the MSD box works. This sounds like it might be more difficult than I originally anticipated...
Fortunately I came across this just in time!

I just received my MSD box. I got it off of ebay for about 100 buks, used. I am on a budget so I can not spend too much money. anyway. I am sure I figure out how to mount the damn thing with all the info on the site.. my problem is where should I mount it??

I am planning on removing the hot start injection and the cold start thingy. I just rebuilt the carb and flushed the gas tank.. I also installed one of those after market fuel filters with the glass window so you can see if its cloged or what not.

I didn; think the box was going to be that big! On the back theres a clear diagram, heavy black and red to the battery, black to coil+ ; orange to coil- ; red for the switched 12v constant ; white for points ignition ; and a black plug to connect to mag pick up. If it doesn't rain tomorrow I plan on installing it, I cna not wait.

Where does everyone install theres?

I mounted mine on the passenger side of the engine bay against the fire wall. Ther is plenty of room there to mount the box without anything in the way. I mounted a foam liner under the MSD box to prevent shock and vibration from having any effects on the box. Its a bit confusing but overall its relatively easy to install.
